Many professional filmakers were hoping that DJI would release a Black Friday deal for their Inspire drones. The DJI Inspire drones are the company’s high end drones designed for professional photographers who want the best footage possible. DJI drones have been used in many Hollywood shoots including for American Ninja Warrior, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, and more.
Unfortunately, it does not appear that DJI will release any discounts on their top of the line drones this year. DJI has announced their Black Friday deals and there is no mention of drones other than the Mavic Pro and Spark. These drones are not powerful enough for many advanced aerial photographers who need an extremely stable platform with a superb gimbal and the highest possible video quality.
DJI almost never offers discounts on their high-end products so this is not really a surprise. Black Friday sales are generally targeted to people who are price sensitive, that’s why DJI lowered the cost of their cheaper consumer drones. Professionals usually will pay whatever it takes to get the best so DJI has decided it’s not in their interest to lower prices.
The Mavic Pro
DJI will lower the price of the Mavic Pro by $100 this Black Friday. This bring the cost of the drone to $899. The Mavic Pro is a great drone that does not have any serious flaws. The Mavic Pro has a 3-axis gimbal with 4k video and 12MP. It’s a phenomenal drone especially because of its extreme portability. It’s so small it could almost fit in your pocket. This is the best drone on the market for people who need quick drone shots on-the-go while traveling. If that describes you then take a look at it.
The Phantom 4 Pro and Advanced
If you don’t want to pay upwards of $3000 for the DJI Inspire but you still want better camera quality than the Mavic Pro, there is a small sale on the DJI Phantom 4 Pro ($1499) or the DJI Phantom 4 Advanced ($1199). If you buy it directly from DJI between November 22 – 27, they will through in a battery valued at $169 for free.
The Phantom 4 Pro and Advanced drones produce far crisper imagery than the Mavic Pro. They will give you H.264 4K videos at 60fps or H.265 4K at 30fps, both at a 100Mbps bitrate. They also have a 1″ 20 MP sensor with nearly 12 dynamic range stops. The brilliant thing about these drones is that they also have a mechanical shutter to stop rolling shutter effects when filming high-speed objects.
The more expensive Phantom 4 Pro has dual band 2.4 Ghz and 5.8 Ghz frequencies to avoid interference problems. It also greatly improved obstacle avoidance with more cameras and sensors. You can get a beast of a drone for significantly cheaper than the Inspire if it matches your criteria.
Inspire 1 vs Inspire 2
The Inspire 1 starts at $1999, while the Inspire 2 starts at $2999. The Inspire 1 has significantly lower flight time at around 18 minutes compared to 27 minutes for the Inspire 2. It’s also slower than the Inspire 2 at 49 mph compared to 58 mph.
The Inspire 2 (7.58 pounds) is heavier than the Inspire 1 (6.27 pounds). Perhaps biggest of all, the Inspire 1 does not have obstacle avoidance so it’s much easier to crash it and cause serious damage.
While it’s disappointing DJI won’t release a Black Friday for their high-end drones, they stand on their own and provide tremendous value even at full price.
