My reviews cover all the standout features for each home security camera system. I also summarize the main pros and cons of a product so that you can make a better-informed buying decision.

Indoor Security Cameras Vs. Outdoor Cameras

Cheap indoor home security cameras are small and discrete. You can hide them so they’re not visible to the intruder and don’t mess with the interior décor. Most are not weatherproof and, therefore, only suitable for inside the home. These types of cameras record crime rather than deter it because they’re not visible. However, some people place “Security Cameras Installed” stickers in their windows.

Outdoor cameras work better as deterrents because they’re visible and typically out of reach. These systems tend to have more features, functions, and better quality video and sound. A decent outdoor camera system can be wired or wireless and offer remote control, i.e., access when away from home.

About My ‘Cheap Security Camera’ Guide

There are 10 affordable home security cameras reviewed in this guide. I chose these products from several dozen of the current bestsellers. The selection process looked at user feedback and expert opinions as well as personal consideration. The first three are the chosen picks for Best Budget, Best Value, and the Top Choice. The remaining reviews are by price, lowest to high, for convenience.

1. HeimVision Outdoor Security Camera | Best Budget

HeimVision Outdoor Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

The Best Budget security camera system goes to the HeimVision HM211. It’s an outdoor wireless system that has the appearance and features of a much costlier product. Let’s check it out.

  • Best feature 1: WiFi 1080P surveillance camera
  • Best feature 2: Clear night vision
  • Plus points: Affordable, waterproof, floodlight, motion detection, siren alarm, 2-way audio
  • Minus points: Alexa can be restrictive

HeimVision’s Build and Set Up

HeimVision’s camera has plenty of features and is a perfect security tool for folks on a budget. Its mobile app is intuitive and makes setting up and navigation super-easy. The waterproofing and build quality is surprisingly good for a product within this price group.

Features and Functions

This 1080P WiFi security camera offers a plethora of smart features. It has intelligent night vision, a floodlight, advanced motion detection, and a siren. There’s also a built-in mic and speaker for real-time audio. Another welcome feature is the two-way storage option. You can seamlessly live-stream the video to smartphones, notebooks, and computers.

The Not So Good

Most first-time users appreciate almost everything this camera offers. However, some users find that using it with Alexa can be a hassle compared to the app. The latter is quicker and better overall. Alexa does work, but it tends to be more gimmicky than functional.

2. ZUMIMALL Indoor/Out Security Camera | Best Value

ZUMIMALL Indoor/Out Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

The ZUMIMALL 1080p indoor/outdoor security camera makes the Best Value slot. It’s a popular surveillance system for homes. It sells well and gets lots of positive feedback from owners.

  • Best feature 1: Wire-free, installs anywhere
  • Best feature 2: 10 minute set up time
  • Plus points: Waterproof, 2-way audio, night vision, motion detection, mobile alerts
  • Minus points: Awkward motion detection, average picture quality

ZUMIMALL’s Build and Set Up

Setting up this portable wire-free camera is a cinch. Even the technically-challenged should have the ZUMIMALL up and recording in around 10 minutes. The build-quality is exceptional for an affordable security camera. It has waterproofing to IP65 standard, which means protection from water blasts at every angle. The camera is lightweight yet rugged, and the company calls it their ‘Iron Penguin.’

Features and Functions

The ZUMIMALL is a wire-free portable system that you can put just about anywhere. It’s app-controlled and compatible with Android and iOS devices. The rechargeable battery is a welcome addition with a long, 5-month standby time. The camera also has a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way audio. Other features include day and night vision, PIR motion detection, and alert notifications.

The Not So Good

The motion detection works but can be fiddly to get right between its 3 sensitivity settings. It can pick up anything and everything, or be sluggish to kick in with some delay. It functions—it’s just not as smooth as some security cameras, that’s all. The daytime video quality is high average and very easy to view. Nighttime video is also viewable, though the quality is on the low side of average.

3. Hiseeu Solar Wireless Outdoor Camera | Top Pick

Hiseeu Solar Wireless Outdoor CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The Editor’s Top Pick is the most expensive on this page but still comes in at just under 100 dollars. It’s another security camera that doesn’t need wires or a complicated setup.

  • Best feature 1: Wire-free solar powered security camera
  • Best feature 2: 9 months of encrypted video recording
  • Plus points: Rugged and waterproof, HD day/night vision, 32GB card, motion sensor, alerts
  • Minus points: Potential motion delay, restricted night vision distance

Hiseeu’s Build and Set Up

Hiseeu’s C10 is a small, rugged, solar-powered security camera. The unit has a decent weight thanks to its metal casing and solar panel mounts. It’s waterproofed to IP65 standards and can resist all weather conditions. It’s an affordable, no-fuss system that should last for years.

Features and Functions

It’s easy to set up and control this solar security camera using the CloudEdge App. It comes with a preinstalled 32GB MicroSD card to save and store the footage. There’s a cloud storage option too if you prefer that. The FHD1080P video is tack-sharp for both day and night vision recording. Hiseeu’s C10 also has a PIR motion sensor, motion alerts, 2-way audio, and a 9-month recording capacity.

The Not So Good

The camera may exhibit a 3–4 second motion delay, especially with faster moving objects. I wouldn’t call it a deal-breaker all things considered, but it’s still a negative. The night vision works well, and the footage is clear. However, the distance is around 20–25ft at best. That’s something to contemplate for anyone who needs a better range for night capture. Other than that, it’s a superb camera system.

4. Wyze Cam Indoor WiFi Smart Home Camera

Wyze Cam Indoor WiFi Smart Home CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Meet the affordable Wyze Cam V2. It’s a small 1080p indoor security camera that you can place anywhere. Sometimes, big things do come in small packages, and this is one of them.

  • Best feature 1: Two-way audio
  • Best feature 2: Full HD live streaming to any mobile device
  • Plus points: Motion detection, free cloud storage, push notifications, voice activation
  • Minus points: Bad instructions, only accepts up to 32GB cards, short cloud vid clips

Wyze Cam Security Camera Build and Set Up

Consider the Wyze 120° Cam V2 if you want something small, portable, and wire-free. This tiny cam has a strong magnetic base and an adhesive metal plate. Wherever you want to place it, you can. There are no screws to deal with or complicated set up. To get started, download the free app and plug in the Wyze Cam V2. It’s then a simple case of turning it on and scanning the QR code. That’s it.

Features and Functions

You also get free cloud storage with the Wyze Cam that keeps footage for two weeks. That’s significant as it’s not something offered by most cameras, especially budget products. Push notifications alert you when there’s something to report. That saves you from periodically checking in, just in case. There’s also an option for continuous recording that stores data to the included 32GB micro SD card.

Multi-User Multi-Device Compatible

Four infrared LEDs let the camera see in the dark up to 30ft. If you want to give others access to the live stream, you’ve got that too. They only have to download the Wyze app to an Android or iOS device and accept your invitation to join. Another neat and sought-after feature is voice activation. That means you can use Google Assistant or Alexa to control the Wyze cam.

More than a Security Camera

This little box-style security camera can also recognize smoke and carbon monoxide. Not only that, but it sends special alerts to your mobile if it detects any of the above. So, the Wyze Cam acts as a fire alarm as well as an eye in the home to keep watch over family pets and intruders.

The Not So Good

The instructions are a letdown. Some users complain that they received the guide in Chinese only. Others report an inadequate English translation or no instructions at all. It’s not a significant setback as there are plenty of video tutorials online, but it is a hassle. The cam only takes MicroSD cards up to 32GB. Lastly, some are unhappy about the short 12 second clips that save to the cloud.

5. BOOCOSA-US Outdoor Surveillance Camera

BOOCOSA-US Outdoor Surveillance CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

This outdoor surveillance camera is at the budget end yet isn’t short on security features. It’s the company’s newest version. It sports a simple design that’s both attractive and practical.

  • Best feature 1: Budget-priced, feature-packed
  • Best feature 2: Shaped to fit into corners
  • Plus points: Full weatherproofing, real-time view, night vision, auto-alerts, motion detection
  • Minus points: Average app, no MicroSD card, large plug

BOOCOSA Security Camera Build and Set Up

This indoor/outdoor 1080p 75° view security camera is built using aluminum material. It’s rugged, vandal-resistant, and has passed IP66 certification. That means it’s waterproof as well as dust-proof, so it’s well-protected against extreme weather. The makers shaped this casing so that it fits easily into corners. It’s a minor detail, but one that gives more flexibility when it comes to mounting.

The 36 built-in LEDs provide surprisingly bright night footage for a camera in its class. An integrated microphone and powerful speaker allow for clear two-way audio communication. Mounting the camera needs a little DIY, though. Then it’s a simple case of downloading the free app, and you’re all set.

Features and Functions

The BOOCOSA Security Camera is a feature-packed product. Live view and playback are available via the app on most Android or iOS smartphones and other devices. There’s also 2-way video, motion detection, and customizable motion alerts. You can record footage to the Jawa app. Alternatively, you can set it to record continuously and save data to an SD card up to 128GB.

The Not So Good

The app—at the time of writing my review—is not as smooth or as intuitive as some rivals. It works as promised, but you may find it a tad clunky if you have experience with other apps. There’s no MicroSD card included, so grab a 128GB if you don’t have one handy. Lastly, the plug is big, and that makes it awkward to use with some outdoor weather-protected power outlets.

6. Wyze Indoor Pan, Tilt, Zoom Security Camera

Wyze Indoor Pan, Tilt, Zoom Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Sixth on the list of cheap security cameras is the Wyze Cam Pan Tilt and Zoom (PTZ). That gives it extra flexibility than the smaller Wyze cam, above along with a bunch of other upgrades.

  • Best feature 1: Affordable indoor smart security camera
  • Best feature 2: Voice control, two-way audio
  • Plus points: High-speed panning, 360° coverage, motion tracking, night vision, cloud storage
  • Minus points: Moves when panning on smooth surfaces, noisy motor

Wyze 1080P Security Camera Build and Set Up

The Wyze WiFi Cam Pan uses the same rugged material as the smaller Wyze Cam V2. It’s small and portable, yet it’s taller than the V2. You can put it in any space where there’s a power outlet nearby. The camera covers a full 360° horizontal left/right view. Its vertical UP/DOWN tilt has a range of 93°. The user-friendly appeal of this camera includes the simple set up procedure as well as its usage.

Features and Functions

This camera has everything the Wyze Cam V2 has plus some. It has a larger, more audible speaker and a wider field of view (FOV). An extra couple of LEDs make the night vision footage even clearer. The high-speed panning covers 110° per second. All the other favorite features exist too. There’s motion tracking, 14 days of free cloud storage, 2-way audio, and voice control.

Continuous recording is an option when saved to local storage, which is MicroSD cards up to 32GB. The Wyze Cam Pan also works with voice activation, so that’s great news for users of Alexa.

The Not So Good

The panning feature is incredible as it means you can check up on any space at any time. There are a couple of negatives, one of which is easily solved. The camera can move when panning on a smooth surface, and may even fall off a tabletop. I’d suggest getting a small, sturdy tripod to stabilize it. The camera’s movement is also quite noisy and may wake a baby if used in a quiet room.

7. SV3C 960P HD WiFi Outdoor Security Camera

SV3C 960P HD WiFi Outdoor Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The SV3C 960P is another popular HD WiFi security camera suitable for outdoor monitoring. It’s a palm-sized unit that comes in two versions, the other being the costlier 1080p.

  • Best feature 1: Low-cost, app-controlled security camera
  • Best feature 2: Small, palm-sized unit
  • Plus points: Clear footage, night vision, motion detection, motion alerts, card storage
  • Minus points: Terrible instructions, awkward access to SD card slot, no audio

SV3C Security Camera Build and Set Up

The camera’s outer casing is rugged aluminum with a protective plastic top cover. It’s IP66 waterproof certified and able to withstand inclement weather. It looks professional and has a quality feel to it. The lens has a 70° angle of view. Six built-in infrared (IR) LEDs provide night vision for up to 65ft. Setting up the camera is a breeze—if you’re a competent DIYer or tech head. Get some help if you’re not.

Features and Functions

The video footage—day and night vision—is impressive for a cheap security camera. Users can receive real-time motion alerts, schedule detection times, and choose areas to cover. You can control the camera using the default CamHi app and various others. The SV3C 960P has a MicroSD slot that accommodate cards up to 64GB that can save hours of video footage.

The Not So Good

The setup is not that difficult, or at least it wouldn’t be with proper guidance. But the instructions are terrible to the point where the inexperienced may not be able to follow them. Look for a helpful YouTube video tutorial from a real user if you get lost during set-up and installation. Other negatives are the awkward access to the camera’s MicroSD card slot and no 2-way audio.

8. NETVUE Waterproofed Outdoor Security Camera

NETVUE Waterproofed Outdoor Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

The NETVUE surveillance camera is yet another small and affordable solution for outdoor protection. It’s a bullet-style, full-featured camera that gets some excellent feedback from homeowners.

  • Best feature 1: Alexa-enabled smart camera for tech-savvy homes
  • Best feature 2: Ethernet and WiFi Connection
  • Plus points: 2-way audio, live monitoring, night vision, motion detection, 2 storage options
  • Minus points: Only fee-based cloud storage

NETVUE 1080P Security Camera Build and Set Up

NETVUE’s camera has a bullet design with a sturdy outer casing. The iP66 weatherproofing gives you an eye outdoors whatever the seasons throw at it. The lens has a 100° wide viewing angle. Users get to connect the camera in one of two ways, i.e., Ethernet cable and WiFi. Choose the option best suited for your installation arrangement. Setting this camera up is quick and easy at any level.

Features and Functions

The camera can easily point in any direction you want. It’s simple to use, even at the raw beginner level. It works with Alexa for live video commands and the playback of motion detection. Voice control is fast becoming the new norm with home technology, so it’s more than a gimmick. Other noteworthy features are remote talk, night vision, customization zones, and multi-user access.

The Not So Good

Some security cameras—even the cheaper ones—offer limited cloud storage. You get a 14-day free trial with this one, after which there’s an annual subscription of around $20. That’s only for motion detection, though. Storing 24/7 footage in the cloud costs about $70 for a year. These are reasonable fees, but not everyone wants the extra cost. You can also save your footage to a local MicroSD card.

9. SereneLife Wireless Indoor Security Camera

SereneLife Wireless Indoor Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The penultimate review is for the SereneLife indoor wireless IP camera. It’s an easy-to-install, no-hassle device that keeps a close eye on the people, places, and things that matter to you.

  • Best feature 1: Easily connects to different devices
  • Best feature 2: Pan & tilt capability
  • Plus points: Simple set up, app control, 2-ay audio, night vision, motion detection, alerts
  • Minus points: Poor audio, vague instructions, memory card not included

SereneLife Security Camera Build and Set Up

The camera is made from rugged plastic material and has a smooth finish with rounded contours. This indoor wireless IP camera from SereneLife offers plug-n-play simplicity. First, plug it into a power outlet and your wireless router. You then enter a user name and password for a new account on the free app. It’s then a case of following the 5-minute setup instructions on your smartphone.

Users can unplug the camera from the wireless router once it’s set up and place it wherever they like. A single login can access one or multiple SereneLife cameras set up in your property. The company app lets you connect to various devices, i.e., smartphones, tablets, PC or Mac laptops, and computers.

Features and Functions

There are many user-friendly security features packed into these little indoor security cams. The 1080p picture quality is bright and colorful. The black & white night vision is reassuringly clear too. The camera’s 90° wide-angle lens with pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) functionality makes it even more versatile. Other features include a 2-way audio function, motion detection, and push notification alerts.

The camera has a MicroSD card slot to store and playback all recorded footage. The maximum card support is 64GB. It’s not included, so make sure you have one ready if you buy this camera.

The Not So Good

Two-way audio is a welcome feature on any home security camera. This one works as advertised, but don’t expect anything special with the sound quality. It’s quite audible, but it’s not kind on the ears. The camera’s instructions are poorly translated and vague in places. This common problem wouldn’t be an issue if the makers put as much effort into the guides as they do their promotional vids.

10. Amcrest UltraHD 4MP Outdoor Security Camera

Amcrest UltraHD 4MP Outdoor Security CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

The final review is for the Amcrest outdoor IP camera. Don’t be put off the basic design. This is a reliable camera once it’s set up and put into place, and one that has a lot to offer.

  • Best feature 1: Heavy-duty, weatherproof eyeball dome camera
  • Best feature 2: Ultra-wide angle lens
  • Plus points: 4MP resolution, night vision, motion alerts, digital zoom, works with Alexa
  • Minus points: Power Over Ethernet (POE) switch not included, no 2-way audio

Amcrest Security Camera Build and Set Up

This camera has an eyeball dome design that fits easily into position wherever you need it. The outer housing is heavy-duty and weatherproof to the IP67 standard. That means full protection from outdoor elements. Its ultra-wide zoom lens has a 118.6° view and can record night footage up to 98ft. The set-up and configuration is a cinch even for those with no prior knowledge of security cameras.

Features and Functions

This rugged outdoor security camera has all the features and functions you’d expect from Amcrest. You can set up email and text alerts via the View Pro app for whenever motion’s detected. Users get to view real-time footage of their property on a smartphone screen in 4MP Ultra-HD resolution. Other features worth noting are the digital zoom and select Alexa devices by Amazon.

The Not So Good

You need a Power Over Ethernet (POE) injector or switch to use this camera. Amcrest does not include this essential item as part of the deal. That means you must buy a PoE switch if you don’t already have one, which adds further to the cost. There is no two-way audio feature with this camera, either.
