DJI has done it again and 2018 promises to be a great year for camera drone pilots. Being a new craft means there aren’t too many DJI Mavic kits, bundles, and combos around. I’ve listed the best options at the end of this intro and will add more as they come out. Be sure to check back often.

Mavic Air Kits, Bundles, and Combos

When people buy drones they usually go on to purchase other accessories later on. DJI monitors sales and knows what people’s shopping habits are for various products. This is a good thing as it helps them to create kits, bundles, and combos that meet the real demands of different users.

Typical DJI packages will go by the following names:

  • Fly More Combos
  • Starters bundles
  • Pro Platinum bundles (most accessories and the biggest savings)
  • Premium and Ultimate bundles w/….
  • Others

Buying everything you need in one go is convenient. It also saves time and lets you get on with flying your drone the way you want out of the box. Sometimes there are special offers too. A kit might include a bonus battery, or save a percentage of the total cost compared to buying the items separately. DJI has multi-accessory kits for all its popular drones including the DJI Spark, Mavic Pro, and Phantom series.

A Word to the Wise

The prices of drones can fluctuate by a considerable amount between various online sellers. The rule of thumb is if something seems too good to be true then it probably is. My advice is to always buy directly from DJI or one of their authorized sellers. This is the only way to guarantee dedicated after sales service and warranties.

Mavic Air Overview

The Mavic Air is the latest unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV in the Mavic family. What we have here is the perfect drone for people on the move who don’t want to lug around lots of equipment. This is not a review of the Mavic Air, per se, it’s an introduction. It has appeal and features that attract some and not others—like all consumer drones. Keep reading if the portability aspect is important to you.

Here are some of the highlights of this incredible little travel drone:

  • Beautiful build, engineered to perfection
  • Lightest, fastest Mavic so far
  • Ultra-portable foldable design
  • High-end functionality and flight performance
  • Hand-gesture controls
  • SmartCapture
  • Internal storage (8GB)
  • 3-directional environment sensing technology
  • 3-axis gimbal with dampeners
  • 4K UHD camera
  • 21 minutes max flight time in ideal conditions

There’s plenty more to love about this mini craft too. Let’s see what all the fuss is about and why you might want to slip one of these small flying robots into your pocket or backpack.

Mavic Air’s 3D Foldable Design

Prepare to be amazed if you’ve never seen this drone folded down. The Mavic Air is only about the size of a regular smartphone in its collapsed state despite its incredible spec sheet. Yes, you did read that right. It’s why DJI call it their ultra-portable drone. The hand-gesture controls mean you don’t even need to travel with a remote controller or RC unless you plan to venture out of gesture range.

If you do want to take the controller you’ll be pleased to know that it’s also foldable. The protruding control sticks come off easily and fit into the allocated spaces in the RC. When you open up the RC there’s a special slot to accommodate your smartphone for added convenience.

DJI Mavic Air’s Camera Capability

Flying the Mavic Air is a lot of fun but it’s still a serious camera drone. The quality of its aerial photos and video are major selling points. You certainly won’t be disappointed. This is DJI’s most portable drone right now and the first in its category to accommodate a 3-axis mechanical gimbal camera. Its angular vibration range and gimbal dampeners do an amazing job at steadying the footage.

The new High Dynamic Range (HDR) algorithms use intelligent exposure settings that work with available light. They help to balance overexposed and dark areas so that the end result displays more natural highlights and shadows. And the Mavic Air’s Digital Signal Processing (DSP) makes shooting more efficient. All you need to know from the pilot’s end is that this stuff improves results.

Fabulous Photos & Aerial Video

The Mavic Air comes with a high-quality onboard camera. It sports a fast f/2.8 lens and has a 1/2.3” 12MP CMOS sensor. The 35mm format is comparable to a 24mm wide angle. It’s nice to know that the camera will produce your video and still images in high-quality—every time.

Pilots can shoot video in phenomenal 4K at 30fps. You can record at 100 Mbps (megabit per second) and capture every precious moment of your adventure in U-HD quality. There’s even got the option to record at 1080p 120fps slow-motion video.

Prodigious 32 MP Sphere Panoramas

Using camera drones to take 180° panoramas is something you can never tire of. The Mavic Air takes panoramas to a whole new level. In just eight seconds or less it stitches 25 photos to create the most amazing 32MP Sphere Panoramas imaginable.

The Mavic Air’s Storage Options

There’s a MicroSD card slot with this craft as you’d expect but that’s not all. You also get 8GB of internal storage as well. Extra storage is always welcome. You can easily export any videos or stills you save internally using the USB 3.0 type-C port.

I can sum up this short intro on the DJI Mavic Air with five bullet points:

  1. Portable beyond belief
  2. Great fun to fly
  3. Easy to use—at any level
  4. Intelligent features
  5. Intuitive craft and controller

By now you should know whether the DJI Mavic Air is a drone that interests you. If it is you’ll want to explore it further. The rest of this page looks at the handy Mavic Air kits available at this time.
