Not all Drone Cases are Equal

DJI’s Mavic Pro is a small, beautiful, powerful flying camera quad. There are lots of drone carrying cases and bags available, but they’re not all equal. Try not to buy something purely on looks as appearances can be deceptive. The checklist below can help you make better buying decisions.

  1. Set your min/max budget as it helps to narrow down choices
  2. The bag should fit your Mavic Pro like a well-tailored glove
  3. Look at the materials and build quality. Shockproof bags are the best option
  4. Consider water resistant materials or finish
  5. Are there enough pockets and compartments to fit all your accessories?
  6. Do you need a bag with extra space to grow into?

Points one and two are self-explanatory, so let’s take a closer look at points three to six.

Materials Matter

Mavic Pro bags and backpacks come in a range of materials. But even quality material is no good if the stitching’s weak or the bag uses cheap zips. And you may want to look for a waterproof fabric if you travel a lot outdoors. Or at least opt for something with a finish that protects against wet weather.

Room to Grow

Quality drone bags can accommodate the Mavic Pro drone, drone + controller, or a full kit. Kit bags have room for cables, extra batteries, a laptop, phone, and space for other stuff. Misjudging storage needs is the biggest mistake people make, especially newbies. Think carefully about what your Mavic Pro carry case needs to hold. It might help to make a list of items and potential future items.

You may also want to buy a bag you can grow into if you’re in the process of building your kit. Most pilots accumulate various accessories and spare parts over time. So, it’s a good idea to look for a bag that has more space than you need if you’re still expanding.

About My DJI Mavic Pro Cases & Backpacks Guide

Some pilots want a simple, affordable Mavic Pro bag and nothing more. Others want the Rolls Royce of cases that offer the most room and the ultimate protection. Then there’s everyone else who sits somewhere between the extremes. This review guide caters to all demands. The Mavic Pro protective carry cases and backpacks on this page are the results of careful research.

I took user reviews and the opinions of industry experts into consideration before finalizing the list. The first three in the guide are Best Budget, Best Value, and the Top pick. The products below those are in price order with the least expensive first.

Here’s a glance of the XX chosen DJI Mavic Pro bags and backpacks.

1. Smatree Mavic Pro Fly More Combo Case| Best Budget

Smatree Mavic Pro Fly More Combo CaseView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

The Best Budget pick goes to the Smatree Mavic Pro carrying case. It’s a smart, affordable, purpose-made bag. The case accommodates the drone and accessories that make up the Fly More Combo.

  • Best feature 1: Easily portable
  • Best feature 2: Houses the Mavic Pro Fly More Combo
  • Plus points: Two carrying options, mesh pocket under lid, smart design, affordable
  • Minus points: Single-purpose use, not as protective as a full hard shell

Note: this bag doesn’t fit the newer Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom quadcopters.

Why Consider the Smatree Mavic Pro Carrying Case?

This product is excellent value if all you need is a simple, lightweight protective semi-soft case. It’s easy to carry with the built-in handle or wear with the comfortable shoulder strap. The interior uses a high-density, durable EVA foam. The custom cutouts provide a snug fit for the drone and accessories. A typical kit includes the DJI Mavic Pro, 3 flight batteries, charger, and the remote controller (RC).

Smatree has even included a couple of SD card slots just above the RC cutout. There’s a handy zipped mesh pocket on the inside of the lid too. It provides extra space for cables and any miscellaneous items you need to carry. It’s a stylish case too, and that’s always a bonus.

The Not So Good

There’s very little to gripe about at this price. The Smatree Mavic Pro carrying case delivers on its description which is why it sells so well. It is a single use case, though. That means it has no other function than to carry a DJI Mavic Pro or DJI Mavic Platinum kit. It’s also a semi-softshell. That means it can’t provide the same protection as a full hard shell or hard/soft shell combo.

Not as protective as a hard shell

2. Pelican DJI Mavic Pro Waterproof Case | Best Value

Pelican DJI Mavic Pro Waterproof CaseView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The Pelican is a DJI Mavic Pro custom hard case. It has a rugged waterproof design and comes with a lifetime guarantee. That’s reassuring in a world of short-life throwaway products.

  • Best feature 1: Waterproof hard-shell
  • Best feature 2: Lifetime guarantee
  • Plus points: Military grade foam, auto pressure equalization, stainless steel padlock protector
  • Minus points: Restricted usage, cutouts sit below drone

Note: this bag does not accommodate the newer Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom quadcopters.

Why Consider the Pelican DJI Mavic Drone Case?

This USA-made hard case is the one to shortlist if you want ultimate protection. Pelican designed it to accommodate the full DJI Mavic Pro Fly More kit. That includes the quad, 5 flight batteries (one in the drome), and the charger. There’s also a cutout for the remote controller (RC), a tablet, and a few other accessories. The case uses closed cell polyethylene foam of a military grade.

There’s a slight storage concern (see below). The product is extremely protective and impact-resistant in the main though. Absorbing shocks and vibrations is a vital quality for pilots exposed to environmental extremes. And the O-ring seal ensures the case remains waterproof when closed. Its IP67 rating means it stays watertight even when submerged up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

The Pelican DJI Mavic case has stainless steel padlock holes in each corner. Add those to the crushproof, drop-protection and proofing qualities and it’s a full Mavic Pro protection system.

The Not So Good

This is an excellent carry case but restricted to the DJI Mavic Pro. That’s great if you only want custom protection. It’s not so good if you need extra space to grow or a multi-purpose solution. The other con is that the quad cutout sits below the drone which leaves it somewhat vulnerable. Custom cutouts provide better protection when they’re flush-fitting or slightly raised.

3. Lowepro DroneGuard BP 250 for Mavic Pro | Top Pick

Lowepro DroneGuard BP 250 for Mavic ProView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The Lowepro DroneGuard BP 250 makes the Top Pick Mavic Pro carrying case. The nice thing about this pack is its comfort factor, extra storage capacity, and multipurpose function.

  • Best feature 1: Removable panels & elasticated straps
  • Best feature 2: Impact protection
  • Plus points: CradleFit™ pocket, FormShell™, smartphone pocket, compact, smart design
  • Minus points: Tight tablet/laptop pocket, not as protective as a hard-shell case

Why Consider the Lowepro DroneGuard BP 250?

The DroneGuard BP 250 is a smart and practical backpack-style carry case. Its primary function is to carry the Mavic Pro, but it’s not restricted by custom cutouts like some bags. That gives it a multi-functional appeal. Pilots get to arrange their kit—and other stuff—in a way that suits them and their lifestyle. The primary storage section is perfect for the quad, its transmitter, and up to 5 batteries.

FormShell™ technology provides impact protection for the gear inside without extra weight. This is a softshell pack, but it’s as armored as it can be for a backpack in its class. All the extra storage makes this backpack such a great choice. The CradleFit™ pocket has space for a laptop up to 15” and a 10” tablet. There’s even a dedicated pocket for a plus-sized smartphone.

The “PhoneZone is a pocket located in the shoulder strap for fast access. The bag’s main interior section has a removable organization panel for keeping cables and miscellaneous items together. It really is a beautiful compact, well-thought-out smart backpack that over-delivers.

The Not So Good

Lowepro’s DroneGuard BP 250 is almost perfect. The only criticism is that the laptop/tablet pocket feels overly tight. A little extra padding would also be welcome, but that would increase the dimensions. The bag is as armored as it can be for its class but still lacks the protection of a full hard-shell.

The Cons
Tight tablet/laptop pocket
Lacks the protection of a true hard-shell

4. Fstop Labs 2 Case Set for Mavic Pro + Controller

Fstop Labs 2 Case Set for Mavic Pro + ControllerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The Fstop Labs is the case set to choose if you want an ultra-mini storage solution. There’s not much to write about as it’s a simple matter here of what you see is what you get.

  • Best feature 1: Mini-storage cases
  • Best feature 2: Hardshell
  • Plus points: Ultra-lightweight, water resistant, drop protection, affordable
  • Minus points: Stinks, limited space, minimal protection, restricted use

Note: The Fstop Labs carrying case does not fit a charger or the Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom drones:

Why Consider Fstop Labs Carrying Case?

This case set is ideal if you want something small and compact to carry a basic Mavic Pro kit. They’re super lightweight at just over 9 ounces for the two. The water resistant, hard shells protect the contents from moisture and accidental drops. The cases fit easily into larger packs. The benefit of a bag-within-a-bag concept is to keep your quad and its RC together, protected, and easy to retrieve.

The Not So Good

Fstop Labs’ DJI Mavic Pro carrying case set is ideal for the reasons mentioned above. A new case smells horrible, but the odd stench eventually wears off. The storage is small and limited to the Mavic Pro and its transmitter. Although it has a hard shell, the protection is minimal against impact. Still, this is about as good as small, portable cases get if it has what you want.

5. Lykus M1 Shoulder Bag for DJI Mavic Pro

Lykus M1 Shoulder Bag for DJI Mavic ProView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

The Lykus M1 is a smart, super-comfortable shoulder bag to house your DJI Mavic Pro and accessories. It’s the perfect size to carry enough kit for a day out.

  • Best feature 1: Fits Fly More Combo + extras
  • Best feature 2: T-shaped dividers and sub-dividers
  • Plus points: Carrying options, furnished with EVA, extra pockets in cover, multi-function
  • Minus points: Short side pockets, average zippers

Note: Also fits DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, and Mavic Pro Platinum.

Why Consider the Lykus M1 Shoulder Bag?

The beautiful thing about this bag is that it’s a 4-in-one solution. It can be your backpack, carry case, cross body (sling) bag, and shoulder bag. The exterior is a durable, water-resistant 1680D nylon. The body uses a hard EVA material that gives it a solid structure. It’s made more secure by the T-dividers and sub-dividers which act as reinforced walls.

You can fully customize the compartments outside the intended DJI Mavic pro and accessories. This bag is perfect for carrying the FLY More Combo. A combo comprises 4 flight batteries including the one already in the drone. There are spaces in the main compartment to house the controller, power adapter, car charger, charging hub, and other bits. The mesh pocket in the lid is ideal for storing cables and other loose items. The lid also has an extra pocket to keep a tablet.

Multi-Purpose Storage Solution

The unique feature of the Lykus M1 Shoulder Bag is its multi-purpose function. It has separate storage compartments that you can use for whatever else you need to carry. There is a decent sized pocket on the outer flip cover and another one beneath it. The side mesh-pockets can also come in handy for a small water bottle and other items you need quick access to.

This bag comes with a belt at the back that lets you slide it over the carry handle of a larger case. That’s convenient if you’re traveling and bogged down with lots of other luggage. There’s also a rain cover to protect the case and its precious contents from drizzle and splashes.

The Not So Good

This M1 Shoulder Bag by Lykus delivers on its promises. The Mavic Pro and accessories fit as advertised albeit a little tight. There are only two minor cons. One is that the side mesh pockets are short and so have restricted storage space. The other is that the zippers seem too flimsy for the bag and probably won’t stand up to a lot of rough treatment.

6. Inateck Pro Water Resistant Rucksack for Mavic Pro

Inateck Pro Water Resistant Rucksack for Mavic ProView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

This bag is the AB02003 Inateck Pro. It’s a professional storage solution for all the Mavic Pro quadcopters. It’s durable, protective, and uses high-grade materials in its construction.

  • Best feature 1: 3-in-1 multi-functional backpack
  • Best feature 2: Special nylon properties (see review)
  • Plus points: Convertible/detachable, large storage capacity, well-organized, anti-theft
  • Minus points: Not as protective as a hard-shell, not waterproof

Note: The Inateck Pro backpack is also compatible with the newer Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom.

Why Consider the Inateck Pro Backpack?

Compact drone bag designers all share the same challenges. That is, they need to strike the right balance between size, weight, and storage. Well, Inateck seems to have nailed it. Their multi-functional AB02003-DG Mavic Pro case is travel-friendly, roomy, and modest. This 3-in-1 pack is a perfect fit for your DJI Mavic Pro quad kit. It can also accommodate a plethora of other accessories.

The main compartment holds your camera quad, remote control (RC) and 3 flight batteries. That includes the one already in the Mavic Pro. There are spaces for the charger, car charger, Mavic battery manager, and other parts.

More than just a Mavic Pro Bag

There are detachable dividers that give this bag plenty of other uses. You can rearrange the storage areas to make it a business bag, light travel case, or as a daily commuter pack, etc. It functions as an excellent kit bag for cameras, lenses, and other photographic gear too. Some bags risk wearing out if used extensively as a multi-function backpack, but not this one.

All-Round Protection

One of the letdowns of many drone bags is the sub-standard zippers some manufacturers use. This bag uses YKK smooth action zippers. These quality zips ensure the teeth don’t break and the pulls don’t pop—ever. Another protective feature is the 8mm thick shockproof cotton.

The special nylon boasts water-resistant, scratch-resistant, and abrasion-resistant properties. The Inateck Pro also comes with a free rain cover to protect it from the elements.

Impressive Storage Capacity

This backpack has generous storage as well as customized compartments. On the outside are two front pockets and two side pockets. And there’s a concealed zipper pocket that provides quick access to smaller, personal items at the rear. The bag even has a tripod pouch on its left side. It’s a product that offers ample storage solutions for all the things we carry around these days.

The Not So Good

The Inateck Pro is sturdy and protective, but it’s not a hard-shell case, and it’s not waterproof. Some Mavic Pro owners demand more, especially at this price range. There are tougher options if you need more rugged protection for your Mavic Pro drone and accessories. The Pelican DJI Mavic Drone Case above and the Nanuk 920 below are two options worth considering.

7. Nanuk 920 Waterproof Hard Case for Mavic Pro

Nanuk 920 Waterproof Hard Case for Mavic ProView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The NANUK 920 is another purpose-made hard-shell waterproof case. It’s a quality product for pilots who want rugged protection for their DJI™ Mavic PRO.

  • Best feature 1: Highly impact resistant NK-7 resin
  • Best feature 2: Waterproof, dustproof, shockproof
  • Plus points: Lightweight, triple action latches, custom cutouts, lifetime warranty
  • Minus points: Restricted usage, shallow

Why Consider the Nanuk 920 Waterproof Hard Case?

Not all Mavic Pro pilots need ultra-rugged protection, but the Nanuk 920 is for those who do. The custom cutouts make storing the drone and its accessories quick and easy. There are foam inserts for the quadcopter, remote controller (RC), and 4 Intelligent Flight Batteries. Other compartments hold the folding props, battery to power bank adaptor, charging hub, and cell phone.

Protective Properties

Nanuk’s 920 hard-shell case can withstand high force impact thanks to the NK-7 resin. The product is also IP67 rated which means it has full protection from dust and water. It can withstand water immersion up to one meter for as long as 30 minutes. The case also has an automatic purge valve. The special valve equalizes interior air pressure while traveling anywhere to any environment.

There are two Powerclaw triple-action latches for the locking mechanism. The fasteners are molded into the super-tough nylon to keep the lid tightly sealed when closed. Use optional TSA approved padlocks for extra security.

The Not So Good

It’s a custom hard case designed specifically for the DJI Mavic Pro. The case has little use for any other purpose than to carry and protect a Mavic Pro drone kit. That’s only a setback if you need more room for other stuff or space to grow your hobby. Another flaw is the shallow depth that keeps the design compact. There could be room for a tablet and a few other extras if it were a little deeper.

8. Professional Case for DJI Goggles + Mavic Pro

Professional Case for DJI Goggles + Mavic ProView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The last Mavic Pro case is by MC-CASES. This hard-shell professional product has a specific cutout to accommodate DJI Goggles. That includes the racing edition too.

  • Best feature 1: Goggles and Mavic Pro kit in one case
  • Best feature 2: Close-able multiuse compartment
  • Plus points: Waterproof, two carrying options, double throw latches, full-length hinges
  • Minus points: Restricted use, price tag

Why Consider the MC-cases Mavic Pro Hard Case?

This is a perfect case for First Person View (FPV) pilots who own both the Mavic Pro and DJI goggles. The soft grip handle makes light work of carrying, or you can choose to wear it using the comfy shoulder strap. The case has custom cutouts for a full Mavic Pro FPV kit. That includes the quad, 4 Intelligent Flight Batteries, DJI multi-charger, and the remote controller (RC).

Other compartments house spare propellers, cables, and the lightning connector. The largest cutout is for the DJI Goggles, HDMI, and Mini USB cables. There’s also a spacious multiuse compartment with a lid for miscellaneous items.

Protective Properties

There are two padlock holes for double lock security. The case’s hard shell provides ultimate protection against the outside world. You can stand on the side, and it won’t buckle. It’s shockproof, secure, and 100% watertight. It’s reassuring to know that it can withstand full water immersion as well. The contents will remain safe and dry down to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

The Not So Good

MC-CASES designed this hard case specifically for the DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Goggles. Its custom interior means it has no use for any other purpose. Nor is there extra space inside if you need to grow your hobby with more accessories. It’s an excellent storage solution if it provides exactly what you need, though. The case offers value, but it does come with quite a high price tag.
