3D Insider is ad supported and earns money from clicks and other ways.

My latest product review guide looks at the best outdoor wired security camera systems with DVR. But what is a DVR, and why might you want to consider one for your outdoor security? Moreover, what is an NVR, and how does it differ from a DVR? It can get confusing, can’t it? Don’t worry. you’ll know enough to make a well-informed choice by the end of this introduction.

It may seem strange to opt for wired security with so many wireless choices around. This overview looks at the advantages and disadvantages of both systems so that you can decide.

Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

A digital video recorder (DVR), is a rectangular box used to record video and stills. It’s the same device we use at home to record programs from the TV. For security use, the DVR records and stores the footage taken by the surveillance cameras. That can be a single camera or an entire network surrounding a property. Below are the main advantages of using a DVR for security purposes.

  • Overwrites camera footage endlessly while retaining quality
  • Can record and store weeks’ worth of footage
  • Easy to search for footage by time and/or date
  • Record only when motion is detected to save space and energy
  • Saves footage to computer hard drives or memory cards (some models)
  • Internet connection for remote monitoring from any location (some models)

There are some cameras systems sold with NVRs rather than DVRs. Let’s compare the two.

Network Video Recorder (NVR)

A Network Video Recorder or NVR is also a box used to record and store camera footage. An NVR records an IP camera (see next) that transmits data through a network cable. IP cameras can connect directly to the NVR box or via a network router or switch. A DVR does the same job but from an analog or CCTV type camera. The difference, therefore, is how these recorders process video data.

A DVR security setup is almost always a hardwired system. An NVR can either be wired or wireless and offers greater overall flexibility. Thus, NVR security tends to cost more than the DVR. A DVR also has channels which dictate how many cameras can join its network. An NVR has no camera limits.

IP Cameras Defined

IP or Internet Protocol cameras let you view live footage wherever you happen to be in the world. A smart device or computer with a connection to the internet is often all you need. Some offer multi-user access. That means other family members or trusted parties can also login to your camera’s feed. IP camera systems are popular for personal security for several different reasons.

The 5 main advantages of an IP security camera over analog CCTV include:

  1. Connects to an NVR (see above), so no limitations on camera numbers
  2. High-res images: vital when zooming in for facial identification
  3. Covers a wider field of view (FOV) compared to analog systems
  4. Full user control, customization, and video analytics
  5. Connects to Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches

IP cameras and wireless setups may seem like the perfect solution, but there are disadvantages.

Why Bother with DVR Camera Systems?

Wireless IP cameras seem the perfect choice. So, why even bother with a wired security camera system connected to a DVR? Well, there are several reasons this is still an excellent choice. First, wired systems are more reliable, and that’s no small point when it comes to security. Wireless networks are getting better all the time. But they’re still prone to dropped connections and other technical issues.

The video footage may also freeze, lag, or glitch, depending on the connection. And the further the camera is from the router, the more likely these issues become.

Peace of Mind Matters

A hardwired system doesn’t suffer from the problems above, and that gives enormous peace of mind. The video feed is forever consistent and maintains the same quality around the clock. The initial setting is more involved, but it’s a one-off job. Outdoor wired security cameras can be considerably cheaper than their wireless counterparts too.

Off-line Security

Not everyone wants their home or business security online. Anything that transmits data over the internet is a potential target for hackers. You don’t have to connect a wired camera(s) to the internet. Off-line, wired security cameras work directly from a physical network with no online connections. The downside is that you don’t get remote monitoring and control when you’re away from home.

Offline security also means there’s no drainage on your internet data usage and bandwidth. That could be considerable for an extensive setup, though minimal with a small home-based system.

About My ‘Wireless DVR Security Cameras’ Guide

There are so many security camera DVR systems available today that it’s hard to choose. I’ve researched dozens of these products before coming up with the ones here. The 8 reviews are short, straightforward assessments that cut through the sales spiel. This shortlist came about as a result of personal opinions, the views of industry experts, and real user comments.

The first three security cameras with DVR are the Editor’s picks. Categories include the Best Budget Security system, Best Value, and the Top Choice, in that order.

CH = Number of Channels | HDD = Hard Disk Drive and Capacity

Wireless DVR Security Cameras Comparison Table

1. SANNCE Security Camera 5-in-1-DVR | Best Budget

SANNCE Security Camera 5-in-1-DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The Best Budget pick goes to the SANNCE Wired Security System. It’s a 5-in-1-DVR 720P HD analog video security setup selling for an attractive price.

  • Best feature 1: Affordable 4-camera indoor/outdoor DVR security system
  • Best feature 2: Remote access via multiple devices
  • Plus points: Quick 4-step set up, waterproof, motion detection/alerts, night vision
  • Minus points: DVR needs a hard drive, potential app issues

SANNCE DVR Security Feature Highlights

You can use this home or office security system indoors or outside. The 4-step set-up procedure is quick and easy, which is not something all DVR systems can boast. You can then view your cameras using a smartphone, tablet, PC, or an HD monitor. The SANNCE motion detection and email alerts make sure you’re always kept in the loop wherever you are.

The 4 identical bullet cameras have an IP66 waterproof rating. That means they can withstand whatever the weather throws at them. The footage is remarkably clear and sharp for a surveillance system in its price category. Night vision is even more impressive. A total of 24 IR LEDs surround the lens and boast a 66ft (20m) night vision range.

The Not So Good

You get everything in the box except the hard drive or HDD. It’s stated in the ad, yet some customers are still surprised when it arrives without one. Not all DVRs include the HDD, and this is one of them. New buyers will need to obtain a 1TB HDD if they don’t already have a spare. Some folks report issues with the Annke Vision App. Contact the seller for app compatibly and alternatives if unsure.

2. SAFEVANT 5MP Security W/ 4-in1 DVR | Best Value

SAFEVANT 5MP Security W/ 4-in1 DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

SAFEVANT gets the Best Value slot with its 8CH 4-in-1 DVR outdoor wired security system. The kit has 8 feature-packed cameras that offer extensive coverage of any property from a single setup.

  • Best feature 1: Wired, outdoor 8 x 1080p 2MP camera security system
  • Best feature 2: Rugged, well-protected cameras
  • Plus points: 24/7 recording, 2TB HDD, live view, motion detection, email alerts, night vision
  • Minus points: No instructions for DVR set up, no audio

SAFEVANT Security 1080P DVR System Highlights

The SAFEVANT made its security cameras to go anywhere indoors or outside. They have a rugged, all-metal housing with an IP66 rating. That means they can withstand the rigors of US weather extremes from hot, dry, and dusty, to wet, cold, and windy. Remote viewing of all 8 cameras is possible from your smartphone, tablet, or PC. The DVR must have an internet connection for remote access.

Live view and playback at any time from anywhere is what brings peace of mind to users. Full HD 24/7 recording and bright night vision are also invaluable. The DVR comes equipped with a preinstalled 2TB (terabyte) hard disk drive or HDD. The camera’s infrared (IR) mode kicks in automatically as soon as light falls beyond a certain level. Intruders have no shadows to hide in with this system.

Customization at Your Fingertips

Customizable motion detection is another welcome feature. It’s not something all security systems have, but they should do. You get to choose the areas to focus the motion detection on, such as the entry points. You receive automated email alerts of the breach at the time of the trigger. Another option is to control the recording start/stop times based on individual surveillance needs.

The Not So Good

Users experienced in wired security systems should find the setting up process a cinch. Those with no knowledge may have problems configuring the DVR. There’s doesn’t seem to be any instructions for it. Customer service gets excellent feedback, though. They should be able to walk anyone through the process if they need help. Note too that this SAFEVANT system doesn’t have audio.

SMONET 5MP Camera System W/ DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The Top Pick goes to another 8-camera outdoor security system. This one is by SMONET, a 5MP, 5-in-1 setup, 8CH outdoor wired security system. It guarantees straightforward fingertip control for users.

  • Best feature 1: High-quality 8CH wired 5MP security camera system
  • Best feature 2: Easy to set up, excellent support
  • Plus points: Outdoor-ready, 24/7 recording, motion detection, night vision, auto alerts
  • Minus points: Vague instructions, no audio

SMONET DVR 5MP Camera System Highlights

This wired security camera system is outdoor-ready. The IP66 weatherproof rating keeps the unit performing well in hot, cold, snow, rain, sleet, and high winds. Operational temperatures range from –20 °F up to 60 °F. Both day and night vision is bright and detailed thanks to the 5MP high-res cameras. Each of these bullet units can see and record in total darkness as far as 65ft (19.8m).

The DVR has a preinstalled 2TB (terabyte) hard disc drive for around-the-clock, 24/7 recording. Users can access all cameras remotely from Android or iOS smart devices or PCs, at any time. Once the disk is full, recording starts again, overwriting the oldest data first. There’s no network connection needed for local viewing via a monitor, though.

Customization Detection & Alerts

You can set motion detection zones wherever you need them. Usual points are windows and doors, but it can be anywhere you choose. You can adjust the motion sensitivity to prevent or reduce the risk of false alarms. The system sends you motion clip alerts if anyone ever breeches those zones.

The Not So Good

Setting this system up is straightforward if you have experience or some DIY skills. But the instructions can be a tad confusing for first-timers. Still, customer service gets excellent reviews. Anyone who runs into difficulties should contact support right away for personal guidance.

4. DEFEWAY Camera System W/ Hybrid 5-in-1 DVR

DEFEWAY Camera System W/ Hybrid 5-in-1 DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

Meet the affordable DEFEWAY Full-HD Security System. It comes with a 2MP 4-channel DVR and four 1080P outdoor bullet cameras. It’s an excellent setup for folks on a tight budget.

  • Best feature 1: Affordable, outdoor 4CH DVR wired camera system
  • Best feature 2: Four DVR recording modes
  • Plus points: Weatherproofed, remote view, motion detection, night vision, auto alerts
  • Minus points: Limited camera rotation, no audio, HDD not included

DEFEWAY DVR Camera System Highlights

The four identical 1080p HD bullet-style cameras are suitable for indoors or outside the home. They have an IP66 rating that protects them from hot, dry, wet, and cold weather extremes. There is no risk of rust, dust, or downpours penetrating the metal housing ever. Temperature defense ranges from -22°F to 140°F. And the lenses have a viewing angle of 80°.

DEFEWAY’s 1080p DVR supports 4 recording modes, i.e., Continuous, Manual, Motion, and Schedule. You can choose any mode for any camera, which is both helpful and space-saving.

Cost-Effective Camera Security

There aren’t any hidden fees or added costs, which add further to the product’s affordability. The free XMeye App gives remote access to all the wired cameras. It works with any modern smartphone or tablet. You also get to set motion detection and email alerts to your surveillance needs. That can be via the app or by email. It’s then a simple case of logging into the system to see what caused the trigger.

IR LED and integrated automatic IR Cut Filter (ICR) provides superb night vision. The 120ft (36.5m) low-light range is better than some of the much costlier setups. It even sees to 100ft (30m) it pitch-darkness. And if you want a bigger screen to view faraway details, you’ve got that too. All you do is use a regular PC monitor and internet browser from any place, and anywhere.

The Not So Good

The camera rotation is quite limited. It’s not fair to be too fussy considering the price, but make sure you place the cameras right the first time due to the above. There’s no one or two-way audio option with this system. There isn’t a hard disk drive (HDD) included either, so that’s an extra cost and job if you don’t already have one. The DVR can support HDDs up to 4TB (terabytes).

5. FLOUREON 5-In-1 Camera System W/ DVR

FLOUREON 5-In-1 Camera System W/ DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

Fifth on the list is another economical wired 5-in-1, 4-camera security system. The DVR has 8 channels, so users can expand the network by 4 more units if needed.

  • Best feature 1: Wired DVR expandable 8CH security camera system
  • Best feature 2: Local and multiple device viewing
  • Plus points: Weatherproofed, customizable motion detection, night vision, alerts
  • Minus points: No built-in audio, HDD not included

FLOUREON DVR Camera System Highlights

Floureon’s 3000TVL 1080P outdoor cameras are well-made and outdoor capable. They have a robust, vandal-proof metal outer shell with an IP66 waterproof rating. There are 36 IR LEDs built into each unit that supports night vision up to 64ft (20m). An IR-Cut filter auto-activates to display and record bright, high-def black & white image in the blackness of night.

The 5-in-1 Floureon digital video recorder (DVR) supports CVI, TVI, AHD, Analog, and IP cameras. The DVR system is quick and easy to set up using the included instruction manual.

Multiple Device Compatible

The DVR has ports for HDMI and VGA to connect the system to a local monitor. A network connection is not necessary for local viewing. Remote access does require an internet connection, as described in the instructions. Just download the free XMEye app to any iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. Remote access gives a multi-camera live view and playback from anywhere.

You can customize the motion detection so that it works only in designated zones. The sensitivity is also adjustable and helps to stop false alerts. How sensitive it needs to be depends on the protected environment. Floureon’s system sends motion email alerts to your smart device via its app.

The Not So Good

This system doesn’t have any built-in one or two-way audio. Many wired cameras don’t, but a few do. The DVR comes without a hard drive. Again, that’s not unusual, especially with cheaper setups. It’s needed if you want to save as well as view historical data or to use it for evidence. Recommended brands are Western Digital and Seagate.

6. ANNKE H.264+ Camera System W/ Wired DVR

ANNKE H.264+ Camera System W/ Wired DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

ANNKE’s 8CH 5-in1, wired 1080p camera security setup is a popular choice. It’s priced at the lower end of mid-range systems. The H.264+ boasts high-compression efficiency and extended recording times.

  • Best feature 1: 5-in-1 DVR 1080p outdoor wired camera system
  • Best feature 2: Long recording times
  • Plus points: Rugged cameras, clear footage, smart playback, night vision, auto alerts
  • Minus points: Poor instructions, no audio

ANNKE DVR Security Camera System Highlights

ANNKE H.264+ DVR outdoor security kit has 4 bullet cameras and can expand to 8 units. They’re small at just 6.8” long and 2.8” tall, yet they’re big on performance. The cameras have a rugged metal casing and a waterproof rating of IP66. Remote video viewing is smooth with clear footage thanks to the quality 1080p resolution. H.264+ technology enhances compression and maximizes storage.

The 24/7 DVR also uses less bandwidth and gives 4x longer recording times than H.264. It’s fully compatible with most wired cameras, i.e., HD-TVI, AHD, IPC, CVI, and Analog. Other DVR highlights are its built-in buzzer alarm and a preinstalled 1TB (terabyte) hard disk drive (HDD).

Remote View & Privacy Features

You can view all video footage locally from a PC or Mac computer via IE. Remote viewing is achievable on any smartphone or tablet with iOS or Android and the ANNKE Vision App. The Smart Playback feature let you scan and find exact pieces of video clips in no time. The app also includes a Privacy Mask that allows you to choose no-recording areas.

This system has all the standard features we’ve come to expect from home security cameras. Twelve LEDs provide a clear, automated night vision range of around 66ft (20m). Motion Detection sends auto-email alerts instantly. They include snapshots of what caused the trigger so that you can act accordingly. And the App sends push-notifications directly to your smartphone or tablet.

The Not So Good

The ANNKE instructions for this product are poor at the time of writing this review. It’s the usual issue with inadequate translation. The initial install and set-up is quite straightforward for the average DIYer. Those who aren’t DIY savvy may need a little help. Either way, the preparation shouldn’t take long. There isn’t any audio feature with this system, but it has all the other essential functions.

7. ZOSI Security Camera System W/ TVI DVR

ZOSI Security Camera System W/ TVI DVRView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

Zosi makes some decent mid-range security systems, most of which get lots of positive reviews. My penultimate pick is the company’s 720p HD-TVI Outdoor Wired Home Security DVR Camera Kit.

  • Best feature 1: 16CH TVI DVR w/ 16 720P Outdoor Security Cameras
  • Best feature 2: Built-in 2TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
  • Plus points: Heavy-duty cameras, remote view, night vision, motion detection/alerts
  • Minus points: Needs better instructions, no audio

ZOSI DVR Security System Feature Highlights

There’s a lot of kit here, but the 4-step installation is quick and painless. All the rugged outdoor cameras have highly protective aluminum casings and an IP66 waterproof rating. The 3.6mm lenses have a 72° angle of view and are surrounded by 21 night-vision LEDs with a range of 65ft (20m). A heavy glass cover further protects the lens and LEDs from the outdoor elements.

ZOSI’s DVR arrives with a built-in 2TB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). It supports both cycle and continuous recording. The DVR connects to TVs and compatible monitors for local viewing via VGA and HDMI cables. The remote view needs an internet connection and the ZOSI App installed on any iOS or Android device. Users can configure each of the 16 cameras the same or with different record modes.

Smart Motion Detection and Rich Alerts are also customizable. Email photo alerts are set up from the DVR end. The ZOSI App pushes motion detection directly to your smartphone or tablet. Also, the DVR sounds a buzzer to notify users at home whenever someone breaches the detection zones.

The Not So Good

The instructions are passable if you have experience with camera security systems. They’re not so easy to follow if you don’t. The problem is vagueness in parts and inadequate translation. Look for a video tutorial instead if you want this product. These cameras don’t have two-way audio, but it’s possible to connect other Zosi two-way audio cameras to the system. Ask the seller for guidance if in doubt.

8. Wisenet DVR Bullet Camera Video Security System

Wisenet DVR Bullet Camera Video Security SystemView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Last up is another 16CH outdoor DVR security system with 16 5MP cameras. It’s the most expensive product on the page, but is it worth the extra? You decide.

  • Best feature 1: Super HD 16CH DVR w/ preinstalled 2TB HDD
  • Best feature 2: Quick and easy set-up
  • Plus points: 5MP cameras, weatherproof, wide lens, night vision, motion detection/alerts
  • Minus points: Plastic housing, fee-based-only Cloud storage

DVR Bullet Camera System Highlights

The 16 bullet-style 5MP cameras display footage that’s 2.5 x clearer than 1080p. These units are small and easy to fix around the outside of any home. They’re fully weather protected with an IP66 rating. The 3.6mm lens has a wide 104° viewing angle and is surrounded by 24 IR night vision LEDs. Night vision range delivers bright footage after dark up to a range of around 130ft (40m).

Wisenet’s 16 channel DVR comes with a preinstalled 2TB (terabyte) hard drive. It also employs the latest high compression technology to allow for extended recording. This Wisenet security kit is quick to install and set-up despite it being a comprehensive system.

The standard features include remote viewing, customized zones, motion detection, and alerts. The latter works if someone tries to tamper with the cameras as well as breach the detection zones. Remote and local access is available via smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Mac computers.

The Not So Good

The camera housing—though weatherproof—is made of plastic. It seems as protective from the elements as metal housing, but may not be quite as vandal-proof. There is a Cloud Storage option, but it’s a paid subscription. Still, anyone who pays top dollar for home security can probably afford the extra few dollars for fee-based storage. Lastly, there is no audio feature with these cameras.
