Start a conversation about action cameras and GoPro springs to the minds of most people. Many of us are familiar with names like GoPro Hero, GoPro Hero5 Session, GoPro Hero5 Black, and Hero7. It wasn’t long ago when they were the only serious options, but not anymore. This straightforward guide looks at 7 of the best GoPro alternatives around. It’s sure to reveal a few surprises too.

GoPro’s are still among the world’s most flexible action cameras, but they have competition today. Many folks stick with GoPro because it’s stood the test of time and buyers know what to expect. The company has a well-earned reputation for excellence. This buyer’s guide doesn’t only name alternative GoPros. It also shows the cameras strengths, weaknesses, and reasons to consider them.

Why Bother with GoPro Alternatives

These alternatives are all capable action cameras. Some are as good as or better than the current lineup of genuine GoPros. It’s unlikely that GoPro cameras will drop down in price any time soon. After all, the company doesn’t want to risk cheapening its brand. Newer models don’t have the same concerns. That means they’re free to come in at lower prices yet offer high-end specs and features.

Most of us get bells & whistles with technology products that we don’t need and won’t use. Sometimes we pay for stuff we think we’ll exploit but never do. Making a list of wants, needs, and realistic expectations is a simple way to make better choices. Keep reading to see how.

Buying a GoPro Alternative 101

The list doesn’t have to be complicated. Just make sure a new model covers all your needs, some of your wants, and meets expectations. Here are ten things to help you along:

  1. Max budget – you may want to set a minimum too
  2. Video/image quality
  3. Field of View or FOV (also angle of view (AOV))
  4. Dimensions: size, shape, and weight
  5. The action camera’s durability
  6. Battery life and charging times
  7. Connectivity options
  8. Memory type and capacity
  9. Range and availability of accessories
  10. Connectivity options

Don’t worry if you’re unsure which of these things matter to you most. It’s sure to make better sense once you start to read the reviews. I highlight all standout features with these GoPro alternatives. Likewise, I also say which areas they fall short in, and why that may matter to some users.

About My GoPro Alternative Guide

None of the GoPro alternatives in this guide are random picks. I scrutinized each model with great care before adding it to this page. I also looked at the opinions of industry experts and the feedback from real user reviews. The first three models are Best Value, Best Budget, and the Top Pick in that order. The remaining action cameras are in price order, lowest to high.

The table below shows my seven picks as they appear in the guide:

1. DBPOWER N6 20MP 4K Action Camera | Best Budget

DBPOWER N6 20MP 4K Action CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The Best Budget GoPro alternative goes to the DBPOWER N6 4K action camera. All its accessories work with GoPro mounts. You can take the N6 everywhere, be that over land, in the air, or under the water.

  • Best feature 1: 2.31-inch touch screen display
  • Best feature 2: Built-in electronic image stabilization (EIS)
  • Plus points: 170° wide-angle lens, waterproof case, 20MP sensor, 4K video, Gorilla Glass
  • Minus points: Vague Quick Start Guide, exaggerated footage quality

DBPOWER N6 4K 20MP Action Camera Highlights

DBPOWER’s N6 is an excellent choice for adventurers on a budget or first-time action cam users. It’s ideal for capturing all kinds of pursuits and extreme sports. These can include kayaking, rock climbing, surfing, diving, and so on. The N6 has a large touchscreen, Sony IMX078 sensor, and records in 4K UHD. It can shoot stills up to 20-megapixels and take in plenty of view with its 170° wide-angle lens.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new DBPOWER N6 action camera:

  • DBPOWER 4K Action Camera
  • Waterproof case
  • Batteries (x2)
  • Bicycle bracket
  • Pedestal (x2), + helmet pedestal
  • Fixed base
  • Switch supports (x3)
  • Commutator
  • Bandages (x3)
  • Ribbons (x4)
  • Mat
  • Wire cable & data cable
  • Cleaning cloth
  • User Manual

Photo & video quality

You won’t find many complaints about the video and photo quality. That’s if you compare it with others in its class, and not against high-end models. The N6 provides impressive, smooth shake-free footage. That’s thanks to its built-in electronic image stabilization (EIS) and motion detector. Video options are 4K/24fps (frames per second), 1080p, and 720p. The best video setting tends to be 1080p/60fps.

The N6 can capture tack-sharp images up to 20-megapixels and sports several shooting modes. The 170° wide-angle lens makes sure the camera captures everything in one take. The lens construction uses seven layers of optical glass. The optics increase light intake for crisper, more detailed footage.

Screen characteristics

The N6 has a large size 2.31-inch intuitive touchscreen display. It’s bright and gives easy access to all the main control functions, modes, and previews. The screen uses chemically-strengthened Gorilla Glass to protect it from breakage and scratches. The only downside is that the camera’s not waterproof (see below), and so needs an underwater case. The touchscreen becomes unusable when submerged.

Waterproof capability

DBPOWER’s N6 action camera isn’t waterproof, but you can still use it below the waves. It comes with a decent waterproof case that lets you take it as far down as 90 feet (30 meters).

Connectivity options

This action camera has built-in WiFi with a 32.8 feet (30 meters) range. Wireless connectivity allows remote control of the camera using a modern phone or another smart device. There isn’t any HDMI or Bluetooth support, but then it can’t offer everything at this price level.

The Not So Good

The N6 is an easy-to-use action camera, but new users still need to learn about its functions. The Quick Start guide could be much more precise. It’s just too vague, especially for novice users. The other letdowns are with stills and video footage. The results are good-quality but not high-quality as the sales page suggests. For its price tag, though, the N6 offers exceptional value for the money.

2. YI 12MP 4K+ Sports & Action Camera | Best Value

YI 12MP 4K+ Sports & Action CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The Best Value GoPro alternative pick goes to the feature-packed YI 4K+. It shares some of the finest GoPro qualities without the GoPro price tag. It’s a serious contender if it has what you want.

  • Best feature 1: RAW image capture
  • Best feature 2: Live Streaming
  • Plus points: Fast touchscreen, intuitive app, voice control, colorful stills, tack-sharp 4K video
  • Minus points: No mounts included, waterproof case not included

YI 12MP 4K+ Action Camera Highlights

The YI 4K+ is the only action camera that can record 4K quality video at 60fps (frames per second). It boasts a Sony IMX377 sensor, 12MP photos, and an option to shoot RAW. The built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) keeps footage smooth and steady. The touchscreen is super-fast and clear. Other highlights are the camera’s intuitive app, voice control, live stream, and connectivity options.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new YI 4K+ action camera:

  • Xiaomi Yi 4K+ action camera
  • 1400mAh battery
  • USB-C cable

Photo & video quality

There isn’t any difference in image quality between the YI 4K+ and its predecessor the YI 4K. That’s because it uses the same built-in Sony IMX377 image sensor. It’s certainly passable as a 12-megapixel wide-angle stills camera. There’s also a distortion correction setting that most folks use to enhance the quality of stills. However, the YI 4K+ shines most as a capable video performer.

The camera’s video capability is what makes it such a good GoPro alternative. The quality is fluid and smooth every time, especially shooting 4K video at 60fps. The only downside is that image stabilization stops working at 30fps. That adds some limitations in fast action situations. There’s always 1080p to fall back on which is also impressive. Shooting at 1080p also saves space and lets you record more.

Screen characteristics

The touch-sensitive screen on the rear of the YI 4K+ has a 2.2-inch retina display. The intuitive UI is ultra-bright and provides clear details. Navigation is smooth and effortless when changing settings, switching between modes, and previewing footage. And the Gorilla Glass does a brilliant job at protecting the screen from scuffs, scratches, and accidental drops.

Connectivity options

Connectivity options for the Xiaomi Yi 4K+ action camera include WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy. Pairing the camera with an iOS or Android smartphone takes only seconds. The accompanying YI Action App lets users download stills and video at lightning speeds. Editing the footage and sharing it on social media is all doable with a few simple finger touches.

Waterproof capability

The YI 4K+ is not a waterproofed action camera. That means you need suitable waterproof housing to take it underwater. YI sells a waterproof case that protects the camera as far down as 131 feet (40m). There are also cheaper, third-party waterproof cases available.

The Not So Good

I doubt there’s a better action camera than the Xiaomi Yi 4K+ for the money. The only letdown is that there are no extras in the box. It would have been good to see at least a few mounts included and a waterproof case. Alas, if you want these or any other accessories, you must buy them separately.

3. Nikon KeyMission 360 4K Action Camera | Top Pick

Nikon KeyMission 360 4K Action CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

Big brand Nikon gets the Top Pick with its KeyMission 360 shock and waterproof 4K action camera. This quality product can submerge up to 98.4 feet (30m) without a separate housing.

  • Best feature 1: Comprehensive 9-product kit (see review for details)
  • Best feature 2: Freeze, shock and waterproof (no protective housing needed)
  • Plus points: 4k video, 12MP stills, lens covers, WiFi, removable battery, UHS-I memory card
  • Minus points: Accidental recording, LED light for low battery status

KeyMission 360 Action Camera Highlights

This action camera by Nikon is a comprehensive 9-product kit that has all the essentials in one box (see below). The camera is as tough as they come. It can withstand freezing conditions, shocks, knocks, and submerge in water without a cover. It boasts 360° 4k video, 12-megapixel stills, and has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. There’s also the Ultra-High-Speed UHS-I memory card.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new Nikon KeyMission 360 4K action camera:

  • Nikon KeyMission action camcorder
  • PD-C20 case for the camera
  • Bonus EN-EL12 battery
  • Transcend 64GB MicroSD card w/ adapter
  • Vivitar pro series curved helmet; flat surface and vented helmet mounts
  • 42-inch selfie-stick monopod wand by Sunpak
  • 5-piece camera/lens cleaning kit
  • Lens cleaning brush
  • PD SD/MicroSD card case

Photo & video quality

Nikon’s KeyMission 360 can record in Ultra-HD 4K at 24fps (frames per second). Other shooting options include full-HD 1080p/24fps, and 1440 x 960 at 25/30fps. The camera uses two high-quality NIKKOR lenses and two image sensors that stitch together the 360° footage. It captures all you see, and plenty you don’t. That makes every view and playback an exciting endeavor full or surprises.

The 1080p video capture and 23.9MP stills are detailed, seamless, and steady. That’s due to the internal electronic Vibration Reduction (VR) and exceptional NIKKOR glass. The camera’s low-light capability doesn’t disappoint either. It has an ISO sensitivity up to 1600 and a fast f/2 max aperture.

Connectivity options

The camera has built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth connectivity. The connection is quick and easy with any modern phone using Nikon’s Snapbridge 360/170 app. There are some good control options with the app, but it’s a tad limited compared to some rivals. Still, all camera brands update and improve their apps on a continual basis. Watch this space.

Waterproof capability

There’s no need to shut this action camera away in a separate case for underwater filming. It’s fully-waterproof up to 98.4 feet (30 meters). The lenses need shielding when submerged, though, and Nikon has covered that. The camera comes with extra lens covers specifically for underwater use. These covers also improve aquatic-based footage, but they do create a few dead spots.

The Not So Good

The camera’s shutter buttons are too sensitive because they have minimal resistance. No one likes clunky buttons, but these go too far the other way. It’s too easy to activate them by accident and have the camera turn on and start filming. And if you don’t know it’s happened, well, you may open your bag to find a KeyMission 360 with a flat battery.

The battery LED warning light turns an orange color when it gets low. Bars would have been so much better as they give a more accurate indication of remaining power. The average battery life is 230 shots or 1hour 10-minutes of filming, but who monitors that? It’s possible to check the battery status via the app but it’s not very reliable. The good news is that the kit includes a bonus battery.

4. OnReal Body 1080P Mini Wearable Action Camera

OnReal Body 1080P Mini Wearable Action CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

This is the OnReal wearable action camera. It’s a mini 1080P body camera that works with either an iOS or Android smart device app. It’s also the second most affordable product on the page.

  • Best feature 1: Discreet mini wearable action camera
  • Best feature 2: Multi-functional uses (see review)
  • Plus points: Simple to use, 8MP stills, wide 120° angle, storage up to 32GB, auto-disconnect
  • Minus points: Average footage, MicroSD card not included

OnReal Action Camera Highlights

Who is the OnReal wearable action camera for? It’s for anyone who wants a lightweight, discreet, low-maintenance action camera. The uses for this mini, portable action cam have no limits other than one’s imagination. You can clip it to your person, back straps, hat, helmet, or anywhere else. Connecting the 8MP 1080P camera to your smart device is simple using the free NeoMe App.

First Person View (FPV)

You can even attach this product to a drone and enjoy a first-person view (FPV) experience. FPV lets you use a phone or tablet screen to see what the camera’s 120° lens sees as it records. All the footage saves to a MicroSD card up to 32GB. This little spy-like cam is so unobtrusive that it’s easy to forget.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new OnReal action cam:

  • OnReal 1080P wearable camera
  • Suction bracket
  • Magic stick
  • Magnet chuck
  • Hook
  • USB cable
  • Quick guide

The Not So Good

The OnReal wearable action camera offers excellent value for what it is. The video and stills footage is perfectly viewable despite the small size. Still, don’t expect exceptional quality with this product type and this price category. The camera takes a MicroSD card although it doesn’t include one in the price. Make sure you have a memory card ready in advance if you choose this versatile little product.

5. AKASO V50 Pro Native 20MP 4K WiFi Action Camera

AKASO V50 Pro Native 20MP 4K WiFi Action CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The AKASO V50 Pro Native is a brilliant GoPro alternative action camera. It has a bright, intuitive built-in 2” touch screen that lets users operate this small yet powerful action camera with ease.

  • Best feature 1: 4K/30fps video and 20MP photos
  • Best feature 2: Built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)
  • Plus points: Adjustable view angle, distortion calibration, connectivity options, iSmart Pro+ app
  • Minus points: App needs work, average low light capability, vague guide

AKASO V50 Pro Action Camera Highlights

This action camera sells well and receives excellent feedback from those who buy it. The AKASO V50 Pro features high-quality 4K/30fps video and outstanding 20MP photos. It has a built-in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) system and a 6-axis gyro. The stabilization does a superb job keeping the footage steady. Another pleasing feature is the Super Wide, Wide, Medium, and Narrow view angles.

The camera’s distortion calibration feature helps to improve any image distortions. Connectivity remote control options come from the built-in WiFi and iSmart Pro+ app. The camera also has an HDMI port that lets you connect it to a TV. The V50 Pro comes with a durable waterproof case. The underwater capability of this little action camera in its protective housing is 98.4 feet (30m).

Here’s what’s in the box of a new AKASO V50 Pro action camera:

  • AKASO V50 Pro action camera
  • Battery charger
  • 1100mAh battery (x2)
  • Waterproof case
  • Remote control
  • Bicycle stand
  • Mounts (x10)
  • Helmet mounts (x2)
  • Bandages
  • Tethers (x5)
  • Protective backdoor
  • USB cable
  • Lens cloth
  • Quick Start Guide

The AKASO V50 Pro is popular for good reasons, but like all models, it has a few faults.

The Not So Good

The biggest complaint from users is with the iSmart Pro+ app. The default language is not English, and that frustrates some users from the off. It’s a case of YouTube to the rescue. The app could use some work overall to give photographers and videographers more controls. Don’t buy this action camera if you need quality footage in low light. It produces good quality results in normal daylight, though.

The last gripe is that the guide is too vague. Like the app, it has plenty of room for improvements.

6. YI 4K 12MP Video Action and Sports Camera

YI 4K 12MP Video Action and Sports CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The YI 4K Action & Sports Camera is the predecessor to the newer YI 4K+. It’s still a solid camera and one that continues to sell well around the world. It’s almost half the price of its successor too.

  • Best feature 1: Ultra-HD 4K/30fps video & 12MP stills
  • Best feature 2: Advanced EIS video stabilization
  • Plus points: Long battery life, intuitive touchscreen, Gorilla Glass, Bluetooth, WiFi, voice control
  • Minus points: No external mic port, poor internal mic, no accessories included

YI 4K Action Camera Highlights

The YI 4K action camera has stood the test of time and continues to sell well. It’s certainly affordable for a camera in its class and a worthy GoPro alternative. It can shoot excellent Ultra-HD 4K video at 30fps and take decent 12MP photos. The camera’s advanced EIS video stabilization helps to keep shooting steady while on the move. Its lens has a wide viewable angle of 160-degrees.

Battery life is often a buying consideration for many. This camera can record up to 120 minutes of continuous UHD 4K video on a single charge. The LCD is an intuitive, high sensitivity 2.19” retina touchscreen. The screen uses super-strong scratch and shock-resistant Gorilla Glass. Connectivity options include built-in Bluetooth and WiFi with the YI Action App.

Fans of action camera voice commands are not disappointed. The YI 4K voice functions can take photos, shoot burst mode, start/stop recording video, and turn the camera off.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new YI 4K Action & Sports Camera:

  • YI 4K Action Camera
  • Rechargeable battery, 1400mAh
  • USB cable
  • User Manual

The camera has a few drawbacks (see below), but they’re minor compared to its many advantages.

The Not So Good

The most significant shared gripe with the YI 4K Action & Sports Camera relates to its audio. The internal mic is not good quality as it picks up wind and other external sounds. That wouldn’t be such an issue if there were an external microphone port, but there’s not. There are no extras in the box either. That means you must buy other items if you don’t already have compatible accessories.

YI’s 4K action camera isn’t waterproof. You can submerge it up to 132 feet with the proper housing. The YI 4K waterproof case cost around $38 at the last check. Third-party options may be cheaper.

7. Sony Action Cam FDR-X3000 4K HD Camera Camcorder

Sony Action Cam FDR-X3000 4K HD Camera CamcorderView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

This is the Sony FDR-X3000 Action Camera. It comes with environmental protection and a quality waterproof housing. You can dive down and film underwater in depths up to 197 ft. (60m).

  • Best feature 1: Deep underwater capability
  • Best feature 2: Excellent image-stabilization,
  • Plus points: 4K video, live view remote controller, adjustable lens, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS
  • Minus points: No lens protector, price tag

Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Camera Highlights

There’s plenty to love with this high-quality action camera by Sony. The 4K video, superb image quality, and range of functions are some of the best around. One of the FDR-X3000’s standout features is its incredible optical image stabilization (OIS). It ensures the footage is always sharp and super-smooth. OIS is also superior to the electronic image stabilization (EIS) used on other action cameras.

Professional Quality Features

A built-in stereo microphone adds further to the camera’s professional recording capability. You can view the footage, access the menus, and control the camera in two ways. One is by using the Live View Remote Control and the other via a regular smartphone. The seamless 3x zoom and adjustable lens angle is another welcome and flexible feature. View angles are Wide, Medium, and Narrow.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth and WiFi. The camera also comes with built-in GPS. The GPS is handy if you want to add location tracking and a speedometer to video files. And pro-level users can exploit the advanced features to expand the scope of the settings and manual controls. There’s so much to explore with Sony’s FDR-X3000 4K—far more than this short review can report on.

Here’s what’s in the box of a new Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Camera:

  • Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Cam
  • Underwater housing
  • 64GB UHS-I class 10 U1 memory card w/ adapter
  • Bonus NP-BX1 battery
  • Battery charger
  • Vivitar Pro series chest strap mount
  • Vivitar Pro series helmet mounts
  • PD PD-C20 camera case
  • PD PD-T14 compact & flexible mini tripod
  • PD five-piece camera and lens cleaning kit
  • PD 8 SD / 2 MicroSD card case

That’s a lot of accessories, and they help to justify this Sony action camera bundle.

The Not So Good

Most people don’t use the waterproof housing if they’re not in the water. The case does provide extra protection, but it also adds to the bulk of the camera. It’s wise to use a lens protector when the casing is off, but it’s an optional extra. The only other “shared” complaint with the Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Camera is its high price. Whether it’s justified depends on individual needs and expectations.
