When it comes to kids outdoor toys, trends come and go. Sometimes, though, a product sticks around and stays with us forever. Skateboards are a prime example of this. They became hugely popular in the US sometime around the late 1950s and still enjoyed by millions the world over. The latest craze in sidewalk surfing, however, is the electric hoverboard, also called the self-balancing scooter.

The biggest question on any parent’s lips is whether electric hoverboards are safe for their kids. After all, it wasn’t so long ago when they made news headlines for all the wrong reasons. The batteries were prone to sparking, smoking, and even bursting into flames. Well, there’s good news on that front. All responsible manufacturers improved their battery technology to guarantee the safety of their boards.

1. MegaWheels Self-Balancing Scooter

MegaWheels Self-Balancing ScooterView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

First on my list of top kid’s hoverboards is the MegaWheels self-balancing scooter. It’s a fun and safe board for all the family with a high emphasis on safety.

  • Best feature 1: Five high safety features
  • Best feature 2: Perfect choice for children
  • Plus points: Sleek design, smooth ride, anti-slip foot pedals & tires, anti-impact casing
  • Minus points: No built-in speaker system, heavy for smaller kids to carry

This is a classic design for a modern hoverboard and easy to get used to at any age. It’s a fun entry-level board at with an attractive price tag. It also enjoys great product reviews. Feedback from real users is always something to consider when buying one of these products.

Riding the MegaWheels Hoverboard

The MegaWheels self-balancing scooter is a smooth ride and its 6.5″ wheels glide effortlessly up moderate slopes and over bumps. You can expect to get over seven miles on a fully-charged battery which means there’s plenty of fun time. Recharging takes around 3-hours. That’s not too bad but it is longer than other choices on this page. But then this is also the fastest of my top kid’s hoverboards.

The top speed of 12 mph is attractive for older kids but may be too fast for younger ones. There’s no learner mode so that means there’s no way to restrict its speed. It’s also one of the heavier boards weighing about 12kg. Some youngsters could find it difficult to carry from place to place. These things are more observations than gripes but points some families will want to think about.

The Bottom Line

I’d say this is a perfect entry-level hoverboard for children and adults. It’s easy to ride and comes with lots of impressive safety features to boot. You’ve even got five exciting colors to choose from. The majority of people who buy the MegaWheels board are happy campers and that speaks volumes.

2. Spadger R5 Easy-To-Ride Board

Spadger R5 Easy-To-Ride BoardView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

The Spadger R5 hoverboard is a great kid’s hoverboard with a few extra bells and whistles.

  • Best feature 1: Beginner mode
  • Best feature 2: Fast battery charging
  • Plus points: Easy to ride, choice of colors, Bluetooth, LED lights, 12-month warranty
  • Minus points: Doesn’t work well off-road

Safe Fun for Young Hoverboard Enthusiasts

Kids can ride the Spadger with confidence and ease. The non-slip footpads provide excellent grip for tiny feet so there’s no fear of falling off. They also prevent ‘newbie wobble’ that some riders experience on other boards. Couple this with the restricted 7mph speed and parents can relax as their kids hover.

A single charge will carry the rider for around 9-miles or even further depending on conditions. And the fast 90-minute charging time means it’s never too long before the riders are back having fun. There’s even a learner mode for those who need to slow things down a bit at the start.

Other features that appeal to some buyers are the mobile app-control and built-in Bluetooth speakers. Being able to play a few favorite tunes on the move is becoming a popular feature of hoverboarding. The feedback on the sound quality of these Bluetooth speakers is all positive. The bright LED lights and choice of colors are other fashionable features of this affordable board.

The Bottom Line

This is an affordable, safe, and very popular hoverboard. It checks the app-control and Bluetooth feature boxes as well. It’s also kid-friendly and sports a learner mode and a 7 mph speed restriction.

3. Hoverheart Beginner-Friendly Hoverboard

Hoverheart Beginner-Friendly HoverboardView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

This is a gorgeous looking hoverboard for kids with plenty to offer. The Hoverheart self-balancing scooter embraces the latest safety standards. It also provides a great rider experience for youngsters.

  • Best feature 1: Covered in anti-fire plastic material
  • Best feature 2: Good quality build
  • Plus points: Easy-to-ride, different colors and patterns available, Bluetooth speakers
  • Minus points: Scratches quite easy, restricted to smoother surfaces

The Hoverheart hoverboard is yet another popular product for younger riders who weigh 44 lbs. or more. It also has integrated Bluetooth speakers which is not something all boards have—yet!

Hovering on the Hoverheart

The Hoverheart is an incredibly easy board to master—at any age. It’s not very good off smooth surfaces but then most kids will want to stay away from grass and bumpy tracks anyway. This board is faster than some of the others on this page despite its ease-of-use. The maximum 10 mph cruising speed is something to think about as there’s no learner option to restrict how fast it goes.

A Hoverheart self-balancing scooter provides hours of fun. It has a potential 10-mile range on a single charge and a battery recharge time of 120 minutes. User control includes all the usual features like accelerate/decelerate, forward, and breaking, etc. And if the kids do want to roll after sunset the multi-colored LED headlights, hub lights, and wheel lights will make night riding fun and safe.

The Bottom Line

This is another significant hoverboard suitable for kids eight years of age and older. It has a faster 10mph cruising speed, a beautiful style, and impressive LED lights. And what kid won’t love the great quality built-in speakers so they can enjoy a few tunes on the move.

4. VEEKO Beginner-Friendly Hoverboard

VEEKO Beginner-Friendly HoverboardView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

Rge Veeko is a great hoverboard for children. Its 6 mph speed protection makes is especially attractive for younger kids. It also rides off-road which is a useful function for some.

  • Best feature 1: Speeding protection
  • Best feature 2: 10 minutes auto shut function
  • Plus points: Smooth ride, easy to control, kid-friendly, off-road capable, LED lights
  • Minus points: No learner mode, no built-in speaker system

The Small Ride with Big Power

As kids become more competent riders you may think the speed protection will render this board boring. It won’t—because you can bypass it. But even at 6 mph riders can have fun spinning, dancing and whizzing around at almost twice the average walking speed. That’s faster than it sounds. And the wheels will continue to roll up to nine miles on a single charge. There’s plenty of pulling power as well thanks to the powerful 350W motors that can take the rider up slopes as steep as 15°.

The Veeko kid-friendly hoverboard is one of the lightest in this guide at just 22 lbs. That makes it fairly easy to carry. The carrying weight is useful when using public transport or if the battery runs out of power. It takes around two hours to fully recharge the battery which is average. And though VEEKO aims this tiny lightweight board at kids it’s still suitable for anyone up to a weight of 225 lbs.

The Bottom Line

The VEEKO Hoverboard is a great choice for parents who want a board that won’t go too fast. It’s a good quality product for the price, looks cool, and provides hours of fun on a single charge.

5. TOMOLOO Safe & Beautiful Hoverboard

TOMOLOO Safe & Beautiful HoverboardView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The TOMOLOO 6″ wheeled hoverboard is one of the most attractive futuristic ones out there right now. It’s not only a beautiful design though. Keep reading to see why this is such a popular board for kids

  • Best feature 1: Easy for children to master (3 rider modes)
  • Best feature 2: TOMOLOO mobile app control via smartphone
  • Plus points: Integrated speakers, customizable LEDs, well-built, smooth ride
  • Minus points: Scratches too easily, not ideal for off-road use

The TOMOLOO is one of the most expensive kid-friendly hoverboards in this guide but is it worth the extra cost? That’s for you to decide but it’s hard to find too much fault with this amazing product.

Riding the TOMOLOO Hoverboard

Like all the boards in this guide the TOMOLOO provides users with a smooth and responsive riding experience. There are three helpful riding modes; Slow, Normal, and High—controlled via the handy TOMOLOO mobile app. Parents love the customization control. It allows them to manage the hoverboard’s speed, torque, and sensitivity to ensure the safest ride for their kids.

Another kid-friendly riding feature is the foot pedals which are high compared to a lot of rival products. They don’t only provide a good grip but also make it easier and safer for younger lighter riders to press down. The thick tires, agile rotation, and electric brake all add to the user experience.

Cruising speed is somewhere around 6.5 mph up to a distance of 12 miles. The board’s 2-hour battery charging time is average for a product in this class.

You can ride the Hovertrax 2.0 for up to 60-minutes or 12 miles in ideal conditions. Recharging the battery takes two or more hours. The good news is that you can easily swap the lithium-ion battery with a spare to continue the fun. It’s worth noting that swapping batteries is not something you can do with all boards. The top cruising speed is a kid-friendly 8mph and even slower in training mode.

The Bottom Line

Most kids fall in love with the TOMOLOO hoverboard and I can see why. It certainly stands out with its incredible design and latest technology. It also checks plenty of other essential boxes. For example, it’s safe, beginner-friendly, has mobile app control, and sports quality integrated speakers.

  • Plus points: Quick-swap lithium-ion battery (continue the fun)

The Hovertrax 2.0 is a great board for kids. It has the invaluable training mode and auto leveling for easier mounting. This board rewards users with an easy ride and up to an hour of fun on a single charge. The blue LED light bar and silicone fender bumpers also add to the style and safety aspects.

Riding the Hovertrax 2.0

Everyone loves a good-looking board but looks are nothing without the ride. The good news is that the Hovertrax 2.0 provides a smooth ride thanks to its well-made rubber tires and axle construction. It runs over uneven surfaces quite well with kids but might struggle with older heavier riders. The compact design of this self-balancing scooter gives it a more sporty appeal compared to some rivals.

There’s a training mode that’s invaluable for beginner riders. It’s not something new users will need for long though. Most beginners soon find the Hovertrax 2.0 easy to control and responsive to their directions. The boards LED lights are attractive as well as practical. The lights at the front are there to indicate throttle control. The lights on the top keep the rider informed of the current battery level.

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

The Swagtron T1 is well-built, solid, and versatile. It has two modes so that kids can get familiar with the board before moving on to the full riding features. It’s also an incredibly responsive board.

  • Best feature 1: Kid-friendly learner mode
  • Best feature 2: Gear stabilization provides extra control

Why Parents Love the Swagtron T1

The Swagtron T1 provides users with a beautiful smooth riding experience. The board is responsive and has fast turning speeds that guarantee plenty of user-control and fun for young riders. The 8mph maximum speed and learner mode give parents some peace of mind knowing their kids are safe. The board also has safe stopping technology and other safety features.

A single charge will keep your brood entertained for up to an hour or 12 miles. One of the main selling points is the fast 1-hour battery charging time. Most rival boards are at least double that. There are even battery indicator lights that show riders how much power remains.

The Bottom Line

Although the Swagtron T1 is nearer the 300 bucks price range it’s still a worthy contender in kid’s hoverboards. Its enhanced safety features will certainly appeal to parents (see table below).
