Most modern security systems—even the cheaper ones—have a motion sensor camera. They don’t all work the same way, and some are better than others. Motion sensing can be an invaluable tool for keeping your property safe. This short introduction looks at the different options and the things to consider. The 8 product reviews that follow all include some type of motion detection technology.

How Motion Detection Works

A motion sensor won’t detect all moving things. If it did, every insect, pet, or gentle breeze would activate it. Some vehicle detection sensors are set too sensitive. You know the ones—the annoying auto that blasts its horn with the slightest of movement. Not all motion sensors that protect property need a physical jolt to trigger them, but some do (see below).

There are two basic types of motion detection used to protect homes and businesses:

  1. Passive Infrared (PIR)
  2. Microwave (MW)

What About the Animals?

Animals outdoors and pets inside can trigger false alarms if the system is not set up and configured right. That’s why a lot of newer products have what’s known as Pet Immune Sensors. They work by ignoring any living thing under a certain weight. Some security systems have dual technology, which is the most effective. Such systems use PIR and MW, both of which must trigger to set the alarm off.

Most homes don’t need dual sensor technology unless you reside in a huge property. Either that or you live out in the sticks surrounded by wild beasts. Otherwise, a regular PIR motion camera sensor is usually enough. At least consider a camera system with an adjustable sensitivity level if you have lively pets at home. You’ll be glad you did.

Wired or Wireless?

There are pros and cons of wired and wireless security cameras. Wired systems still tend to have an edge when it comes to quality and reliability. However, a fully-wired home security system needs more work to install and set up. It’s not a job to tackle alone unless you’re a competent DIYer. There are holes to drill, cables to secure, and other potential modifications involved.

WiFi systems have come a long way both in terms of reliability, quality, and ease of use. Also, wireless cameras can often get into places a wired system can’t, and that’s significant. They’re also less obtrusive than a physically connected security camera system. Most people can install and set up wireless security equipment without any training or technical knowhow.

Other Considerations

The place(s) you want to install your new motion sensor cameras may not be the best location or position. There are several dos and don’ts, and I won’t get into them all here. Make sure you read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. They advise you how and where to install your cameras for the best effect. Below are a few recognized rules for placement.

  • Keep PIR sensors clear of heating vents (see your instructions for guidance)
  • Place motion sensors at walkthrough areas or chokepoints
  • Cover entry points like doors, hatches, and larger windows

Summing Up

OK, that concludes this brief introduction to motion sensor camera types and uses. Every system offers similar features and functions, but they won’t all be equal. Create a list of wants, needs, and expectations. Don’t worry too much if you’re unsure right now. You’ll have a much better idea once you start to read through my mini-reviews below.

About My ‘Motion Sensor Camera’ Guide

There are 8 cameras reviewed in this guide, all with motion sensor detection technology. They cover a range of products from the simple to the highly sophisticated, and for all budgets. I chose these products based on personal research that also took user feedback into account. I looked over the views of other industry experts as well before finalizing the shortlist.

Motion Sensor Cameras Comparison Table

1. BOOCOSA Outdoor Cam w/ Motion Detection | Best Budget

BOOCOSA Outdoor Cam w/ Motion DetectionView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

Don’t let the low cost of this security camera deter you. OK, it’s not a high-end product, but BOOCOSA’s outdoor WiFi cam offers plenty of vital features for a budget system.

  • Best feature 1: Motion detection
  • Best feature 2: Alert notifications
  • Plus points: Fully-waterproof, 1080p camera, night vision, 2-way audio, excellent value
  • Minus points: No memory card, average app

1 BOOCOSA Security Camera Highlights

This affordable 1080p security camera is built to withstand the rigors of outdoors. Its unique shape is a purposeful design to make it easier to mount into corners. The camera has a rugged metal housing despite its low price, and an IP66 weatherproof rating. That means you don’t have to worry about dust or water penetration during wet and windy storms.

Low in Price High on Features

We can find many of this camera’s features on much pricier products. The BOOCOSA security camera comes equipped with a fully-functional motion detection sensor and auto-alerts. It has a nighttime range of 32ft, a lens with a 75° view, and two-way audio. The latter is thanks to its built-in mic and powerful speaker. Two-way talk is also invaluable for keeping in touch with the folks back home.

The Not So Good

The camera’s MicroSD slot supports cards up to 128GB, but there’s not one included. New buyers will need to get the card as an extra if they don’t already have one. Also, the app for this system isn’t the best. It lacks some of the smoothness and seamless navigation provided by many rival apps. Lastly, the plug is a tad big and awkward to cover when using an outdoor power outlet.

2. DC HOUSE Security Camera W/ Motion Sensor | Best Value

DC HOUSE Security Camera W/ Motion SensorView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The Best Value pick goes to the DC HOUSE WiFi home security camera. It’s a 100% wire-free, battery-operated solution with a magnetic bracket. That gives you unlimited placement opportunities.

  • Best feature 1: PIR motion sensor
  • Best feature 2: Magnetic bracket
  • Plus points: Built-in battery, waterproof, 2-way talk, card storage, notifications, night vision
  • Minus points: Limited local storage

DC HOUSE Security Camera Construction

The camera housing is made using quality ABS material and has an IP65 weatherproof rating. There are four rechargeable batteries inside that provide an impressive 12 month standby time. This 1080p 2.4GHz WiFi security camera sports a 130° lens and a built-in mic/speaker for two-way talk. Local storage is possible via the integrated SD slot that can accommodate cards up to 64GB.

Feature Highlights

The DC HOUSE Security Camera is super quick to set up with your local WiFi. All you do is scan the QR code and let the ToSee app bridge the camera to the network. The system is then available for remote view using either an Android or iOS smart device. PIR motion detection is effective and sends out auto-notification alerts. Other features include night vision, snapshots, and the option to share data.

The Not So Good

Local card storage is welcome on any security camera, but they don’t all provide it. This DC HOUSE unit has a card slot, but it only supports SD cards up to 64GB. That’s not a game-changer, although 128GB would have been better. The ToSee app is a more significant concern. It gets mixed reviews, both praise, and criticism. The latter is due to slow connections and the occasional crash.

3. Ring Floodlight Motion-Activated Camera | Top Pick

Ring Floodlight Motion-Activated CameraView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

Ring’s Floodlight gets the Top Pick slot. It’s an all-in-one, high tech solution for security-conscious people. There are two powerful floodlights attached to either side of the 1080HD camera.

  • Best feature 1: Built-in, customizable motion sensors
  • Best feature 2: Ultra-bright floodlights
  • Plus points: Motion alerts, live view, 2-way talk, remote-activated siren, works with Alexa
  • Minus points: No local card storage, needs DIY installation

Ring Floodlight Security Camera Highlights

This security camera sells well despite its highish price tag. That’s because it delivers on its promises and provides homes and businesses with a simple yet effective solution. It’s a weatherproof outdoor system though I was unable to find the IP rating. The unit has built-in motion sensors and customizable motion detection. Customization is a valuable feature that helps to prevent false alarms.

It Shoots if You Move

The Ring floodlight Cam wakes up and shoots video the second it detects movement across its zone. The bright LEDs are also motion activated and illuminate an area of 270° of intense light. The brightness of the dual floodlights also helps to capture better image details. The Ring Floodlight Cam sends out activation alerts to your smartphone, computer, or tablet in real-time.

Other features are 1080HD live-view, two-way talk, and an ear-splitting remote-activated siren. This system also works with Amazon Alexa devices. That gives you voice-activated video on demand.

The Not So Good

The Ring Floodlight Cam does not have local storage. That means there’s no way to save your footage to an SD card or another medium. Those who want access to the recorded video must pay a monthly subscription to save data to the cloud. However, there isn’t a charge for viewing live video. Installation is straightforward for anyone with DIY skills, but others may need help.

4. SV3C Surveillance Camera w/ Motion Detection

SV3C Surveillance Camera w/ Motion DetectionView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

The SV3C single 720p HD surveillance security camera is another affordable unit with motion detection. The brand is well known and has a reputation for excellent quality at the budget level.

  • Best feature 1: Customized motion detection
  • Best feature 2: IP66 waterproof
  • Plus points: Simple set up, cable & WiFi, night vision, remote viewing, multi-user viewing
  • Minus points: Bad user guide

SV3C Surveillance Camera Highlights

SV3C’s Surveillance Camera has an IP66 rating which protects it from adverse weather. Its rugged aluminum housing also helps to protect the unit from vandalism. This product works just as well as an indoor security cam if that’s what you need. Setting the camera up is a simple 3-step procedure. One, download the free CamHi app. Two, connect the cables. Three, Configure the WiFi. That’s it.

The camera is adjustable by 360° in the horizontal direction, and by 90° vertical. It’s small details like this that add to the versatility of this adaptable security tool.

Dual Connectivity and Multi-User Viewing

This camera lets you choose between LAN cable and WiFi connection. You can view the camera’s live stream from any Android or iOS smart device with an active internet connection. You’re not restricted to one device either. Other authorized users can check in on the property from their smartphones, tablets, laptops, or PCs.

The customized motion detection is invaluable as it lets users adjust the sensitivity for more accuracy. The biggest complaint with automated alerts are false alarms, and customization prevents that. The SV3C also allows you to set motion detection schedules. The night vision range is 67ft or 20m.

The Not So Good

It’s an easy camera to set up for anyone with a little experience. However, first-timers are unhappy with the poorly written—and somewhat vague—Quick Set-up Guide. My advice would be to head over to the company’s website for better guidance or search for a YouTube tutorial. This camera doesn’t have 2-way audio. Consider the SV3C 1080P HD if two-way talk is essential to you.

5. TOGUARD Trail Hunting Camera W/ Motion Activation

TOGUARD Trail Hunting Camera W/ Motion ActivationView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

Not all motion sensor devices are for security purposes. Meet the TOGUARD Digital Trail Hunting camera. Its primary aim is to capture wildlife, but it also works as an effective security tool.

  • Best feature 1: 3 Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors
  • Best feature 2: Full 1080p, 14MP camera
  • Plus points: 120° lens, long night vision, outdoor-proof, adjustable sensors, fast tripper speed
  • Minus points: Vague manual, low storage capacity, needs 8 batteries

TOGUARD H45 Trail Camera Highlights

TOGUARD 14MP 1080p trail hunting camera is rugged and built for use in severe conditions. It’s rated IP56 so that photographers can work in rough environments. A protective cage makes the camera drop-proof, which is essential when working in the dark. Videographers can set the motion sensitivity from Low, Normal, and High to suit the situation.

The 120° wide-angle lens and 75ft night range give wildlife photographers plenty of scope. TOGUARD’s trail hunting camera uses 42 infrared LEDs, so there’s no need for bright flash. That gives you a much better chance of filming and shooting animals—figuratively speaking—without scaring them away. The 0.3-second fast trigger speed is another of the trail camera’s standout features.

The Not So Good

The manual that comes with the TOGUARD Trail Hunting Camera is vague and confusing in parts. It’s better to watch the video tutorials instead. It has a MicroSD slot but only takes cards up to 32GB, which is unfortunate. The last gripe is the need for four to eight AA batteries to run. That’s a lot of power, but the good news is they last a good while. It also takes rechargeables.

6. KAMTRON Surveillance Camera W/ Motion Detection

KAMTRON Surveillance Camera W/ Motion DetectionView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The futuristic AMTRON IP surveillance camera is a popular choice as an indoor security cam. It’s an affordable product, but it doesn’t fall short on easy-to-use features.

  • Best feature 1: Effective infrared (IR) night vision
  • Best feature 2: 2K 3MP Ultra-HD camera
  • Plus points: Quick set up, panoramic views, real-time motion alerts, multiple viewing
  • Minus points: Needs a power outlet, camera & audio delay

KAMTRON Surveillance Camera Highlights

The KAMTRON WiFi home security eye has a lot to offer for a budget-end WiFi camera. Setting up is quick and easy, even for the novice. The built-in full-HD 2k 3-megapixel camera produces clear, bright viewing. IR night vision has an indoor range of 20ft in pitch darkness. The lens has an ultra-wide angle and moves in a 350° horizontal and 100° vertical rotation—no blind spots.

This camera also provides users with real-time alerts and snapshots when it detects motion. You’re not restricted to only smartphones either. The KAMTRON works with tablets, laptops, and PCs too. The bigger screens are invaluable if you want to view and control a multiple camera system. Other features include 2-way audio, MicroSD storage up to 128GB, and an optional cloud storage service.

The Not So Good

There’s no battery option, which means the surveillance camera needs a power outlet. It’s not a major setback, but it does make the unit less portable than the wire-free alternatives. Most users report a little delay when controlling the camera. There’s also a slight delay with the two-way audio feature. These are not significant flaws, but those used to smoother systems may find them annoying.

7. Blink 5 Indoor Security Cameras W/ Motion Sensors

Blink 5 Indoor Security Cameras W/ Motion SensorsView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

There are lots of reasons why the Blink 5-camera indoor security system sells so well. The small casing and wire-free appeal make this a truly versatile solution. Let’s see what else it offers.

  • Best feature 1: Built-in motion sensor alarm
  • Best feature 2: Long-lasting battery-power
  • Plus points: Quick set up, HD video, live view mode, motion detection, instant alerts
  • Minus points: Average image quality, no local card storage, no text alerts

Blink 5 Indoor Camera Security Highlights

This compact, ultra-portable five-camera system gets its own wall hub. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, and you’re then free to place the tiny cameras wherever you need them. These wire-free units can run for up to two years on the included Lithium batteries. The Blink free app works with all iOS and Android devices. The app provides live streaming and receives motion detection alerts.

The cameras have motion detection and send out instant alert notifications. The night vision works by using a visible white LED illuminator. It does a decent job too. Still, visible light won’t suit those who want a stealth-type night vision. Other highlights include a 110° camera angle, 1-way audio, and one mounting kit per camera. Each unit has a small blue LED to let you know when it’s on and working.

The Not So Good

The image quality is average—perfectly viewable—but still only average. It’s clear enough to identify details, but a little more clarity would have been welcome. The saved recording is always better than the live feed. There’s no local storage option, either. All data saves to the cloud, which has a free or fee-based service depending on needs. Lastly, alerts are via app only, so no text message option.

8. Amcrest 4MP Camera W/ Full Motion Detection

Amcrest 4MP Camera W/ Full Motion DetectionView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

According to Amcrest, its 4MP PoE+ Pan/Tilt/Zoom security camera sees faster, closer, and clearer. But is it so much better than the nearest rivals? Let’s take a closer look to see.

  • Best feature 1: CMOS image sensor w/ 328ft night vision
  • Best feature 2: 12X optical zoom, 16x digital zoom
  • Plus points: 4MP UHD camera, waterproofed, live view, multiple storage options, alerts
  • Minus points: NO audio feature, vague instructions

Amcrest 4MP Security Camera Highlights

This resilient outdoor camera has an IP66 rating, which means it can withstand all weather. Its starlight technology and IR LEDs enable the lens to capture detailed footage at night up to 328ft (100m). Another unique feature is the H.265 compression technology. What that does is save valuable storage space by compressing files with no noticeable loss in quality.

Authorized users can stream live, UHD video at any time from any place. All you need is an Apple iOS or Google Android mobile device and the Amcrest View Pro App. Motion detection, motion alerts, and multiple storage options are other valuable features. The latter includes MicroSD up to 128GB, DVR, the Cloud, and NAS (Network Attached Storage). This camera also works with Amazon Alexa.

An Impressive Camera Indeed

Security cameras must be able to capture images that are identifiable when zoomed in. This Amcrest model delivers on all fronts. It has Pan/Tilt/Zoom (PTZ) capability and produces UHD 4MP footage @ 30fps. The PTZ feature boasts 12x optical zoom and 16x digital zoom capability. It pans at 360° and has a tilt angle of 90°, so no blind spots. Any intruders to your property WILL get caught on camera.

The Not So Good

This camera doesn’t have one or two-way audio. Some people like that feature as they can verbally warn intruders they’re caught on camera, and that the police are on the way. The instructions may prove a little hard for first-timers to follow. The good news is that after-sales support is responsive and super helpful should you need it.
