One of the primary reasons why people are looking for smart home and automated devices is security. These all-in-one cameras are proof that people are really concerned about the safety of their homes and property.

The latest security systems are not just cameras, but they also come with a few advancements like motion detection technology. Some even come with temperature and air quality sensors that can alert you if there is a fire or a build-up of dangerous gases inside your home.

Two of the most popular players in the all-in-one space are Piper and Canary, and they make excellent devices that keep homes a lot safer, track pets and monitor everything that goes on in your home. The added feature of being connected to your smartphone also helps to give you an idea of what is happening just by a quick glance.

Let’s take a look at the device that is in the all-in-one security space and see which of these are great additions to your home. These are generally similar devices, but there are subtle differences that might sway you to pick one over the other.

Piper nv

These are all-in-one security cameras, so they are relatively large than others on the market. For one, the Piper nv is 5.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, which is a bit heftier than most. It does come with a stand so you can position it on a shelf where it can take advantage of its wide field of view.

The Piper nv has a glossy curved shape that can easily blend in with other objects in your home, and you will not even notice it’s there. The camera is on the face of the device with a motion sensor below it. There is also a microphone at the bottom of the front panel. At the same time, the speaker is positioned at the top for two-way audio capabilities. At the back is a port for AC power, but it also comes with a compartment for three AA batteries in the case of backup purposes.

There are three holes on the backside that you can use to mount the Piper nv on the wall. Although it does look a lot better when it is installed as you can easily conceal it with other items on top of a shelf.

Canary Pro

Canary has a few all-in-one security camera models, but their most iconic one is the Canary Pro. It has the same design language as the Piper nv, but is sleeker with more rounded curves. Its cylindrical shape measuring 6 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter make it slimmer to look at and a lot more attractive as it matches well with your existing furniture and fixtures.

Its design, if you simply look at the dimensions, can be somewhat deceiving. It matches that of the Piper nv, yet it feels slimmer, sleeker, and lighter. It also looks unassuming with the wide-angle lens located in the middle of the front panel. The rear has a few ports, particularly Ethernet to hardwire the device into your network.

One of its downsides is that it does not have mountable fixtures at the back, so your only option is to place it on a shelf or table. Still, it works fine and should be able to cover the entire room with its 147-degree camera.

Canary View

Canary View

The Canary View looks similar to the Pro version. In fact, it’s a stripped-down version of it. It is, after all, a budget version of its more feature-packed sibling. However, as for the design, there is little that separates them.

Some build features are different, though, like the View does not come with an alarm siren. Some missing components are temperature, humidity, and air quality sensors. So, do not expect it to give you that information. It also does not have an Ethernet connection, so make sure that you have reliable Wi-Fi before getting this.

Canary Flex

You don’t have to look far for an all-in-one security camera with a different design. The Canary Flex is a pill-shaped device that can fit on the palm of your hands. It’s a departure to Canary’s design language with their Pro and View cameras but still comes with similar levels of performance.

One of the differences between the Flex and its other siblings is it is weatherproof and is suited for use outside your home. It also comes with built-in rechargeable batteries so you can position it as far away as your Wi-Fi can reach. The camera makes for an excellent outside camera that you can use to monitor your driveway or backyard.

Our Pick: Canary Pro for its robust and sleek design

Piper nv

As an all-in-one system, the Piper nv boasts a wide range of features. It’s a security, home automation, and video monitoring system all rolled into one offering a lot of versatility on a single device.

On the video monitoring end, it comes with a 3.4-megapixel camera with a 180-degree field of view that’s wider than most security systems. If you are looking for 4K recording, this is not the device you are looking for, but its 1080p is capable of giving you a crisp and clear video. Combining both its Full HD resolution and the wide-angle capabilities can give you the peace of mind you are looking for in a security system.

One of the exciting features of the Piper nv is its night vision. It amplifies the smallest amount of ambient light, allowing you to see people and objects in the dark. It’s an excellent feature that will give you added security since you always know what is happening around your home.

Canary Pro

The Canary Pro combines a lot of features in a small package that allows you to take a closer look at what’s happening around your home. As a security system, one of its more prominent features is its Full HD 1080p camera that is capable of recording footage or playing a live stream for you. The 147-degree field of view is not the widest, but extensive enough to give you a good glimpse of your home.

The footage you get with the Canary Pro is clear and crisp so you can see people and objects in detail. It comes with a zoom feature to get up close to a particular subject. You can also pan and tilt the camera to give you a better view.

Similar to the Piper nv, it has night vision capabilities, so you can see your home in the dark. Although, it also works well in low light conditions as the sensors can smooth out footage so you can see a colored version before the night vision kicks in.

Canary View

The Canary View sports a 2-megapixel sensor that can record 1080p resolution videos. It is not the best in terms of quality, but it should work well, especially if you are only monitoring indoors. Couple that with a 147-degree field of view, and you should be able to get good coverage of your home.

The videos are bright with decent colors, of course, it helps if there is sufficient lighting. As it darkens, its 12 infrared LEDs will kick in and show you a grayscale night vision version of your home. The quality is exceptional, allowing you to distinguish details such as facial features. It is possible to get pixelated parts, especially when something or someone is moving quickly through the screen.

Overall, the image quality on both daytime and night vision modes is decent and should help you sleep since you know that the Canary View will record anything it finds out of the ordinary.

Canary Flex

Canary Flex

The Canary Flex is a small device, and that also brings lesser quality components. For one, its camera is only capable of recording HD 720p videos even though it has a 1080p sensor. There is a noticeable detail loss with the Flex, but this is quickly offset with improved buffering times.

Even though you might not have the fastest internet connection, you should be able to have a Flex installed and watch it without experience any issues. Still, the quality is decent and coupled with excellent live streaming capabilities, you should be able to track everything that is happening in your home without difficulties.

Its camera only has a 116-degree field of view, which is not incredibly wide, but enough for decent coverage around your home. As long as you position it wisely, you should be able to see everything you need in the frame.

Our Pick: Piper nv for its superior field of view

Piper nv

At the center of the Piper nv security system are its different usage modes: Stay, Away, Vacation, and Notify Only. This is important because you can customize each of these to perform a certain way. You will be able to set how you want to be notified, whether it’s by push, email, phone call, text.

What makes this possible is the suite of sensors that are on the Piper nv from motion, sound, temperature, and even air quality. Whenever it detects individual sensors going off, you can set it to alert you or take a quick recording that you can review at a later time.

Setting these rules up is reasonably straightforward, and the process is intuitive. This will give you the right amount of customizability that fits where you are. After all, you do not want to be notified when the camera detects movement around your home while you are around.

The Piper nv also comes with a built-in alarm, which can come in handy whenever it detects unusual activity when you are not around. It’s loud enough to alarm your neighbors so they can call the authorities to investigate.

Canary Pro

The Canary Pro comes with a few additional sensors apart from the usual motion detector. It is also capable of monitoring temperature, air quality, and humidity. It sends you an alert whenever it detects anything unusual.

Apart from the smartphone alerts, it can also put out a sharp 90+ dB siren on your phone, so you know that it has detected something unusual. This sound is going to come out of your phone, but there is also an option to turn on the camera’s siren to startle a burglar in your home when you are not around.

The Pro also has geofencing technology that can detect a paired device, such as your smartphone. When it senses your phone, the camera will disarm itself so you will not get unnecessary notifications while you go around your home. This feature comes in handy if you are quite forgetful since it will do all these automatically.

The Pro comes with environmental sensors, and it can track them quite accurately. Using its Homehealth Technology, it can make sure that your home is at optimum conditions with temperature and air quality sensors regularly taking a reading. This is especially handy whenever you are away from home and want to check if your home is too hot for your pet.

Canary View

The Canary View is a bit different when it comes to handling motion detection. It does come with three modes, namely Away, Home, and Night. The difference between these three is mainly how they behave when they sense movement.

Activating Home mode will tell the camera to not record any video or even throw up any alerts. It’s going to offer full privacy since you can turn off the cameras and only set it to record whenever it detects movement. You can also set it further when it detects a person moving.

Away mode is pretty much similar to that of the Canary Pro as it uses geofencing to activate it. It detects a paired device and not you so, it can get tricky if you have multiple gadgets connected to the camera as it may not activate when you leave. Now, in Away mode, you can set the View to record or switch whenever it detects motion.

The View’s Night mode is the only one with scheduling. Although it is still a little rough around the edges since you can only set a block of time once, which is then applied to all days of the week. It’s not a flexible system, but having it is useful at the same time.

You can also set activity zones with the View, even allowing you to set irregular shapes, so you do not select an area where there is usually a lot of movement. Motion detection sensitivity can also be changed so you can make sure that it only alerts you when it senses a person rather than an animal or an object.

Canary Flex

Since the Canary Flex is a much smaller device, it lacks the environmental sensors that both the Pro and View have. So, you will not be able to monitor things like temperature, humidity, and air quality.

It only comes with a motion detector that pretty much works, just like its two larger siblings. You get the three modes like Home, Away, and Night, which operates the same way as the Pro and Flex. It is a device that is going to improve the security significantly in your home but without the added features of Canary’s more advanced models.

Piper nv

The Piper nv is not just a home security camera, but it comes with a neat set of smart features. To control it, you will need to access the device via its companion mobile app on your smartphone. Now, it does not come with a web portal, which would have been a handy way to check out your camera.

You will not have problems with compatibility since its app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. No matter what ecosystem you use, you should be able to control your Piper nv.

Navigating the app is easy, and the layout is relatively intuitive. On the home screen, you will be able to set what mode you want your camera to be in. Tapping on a mode will activate that for you and will depend on the rules you set for it, will deploy it so you can monitor your home.

The app also allows you to get a live video view of your camera feed. Even when you are not home, you can be sure that you always have eyes open for added security. There are also other controls like speaking into the app, so it transmits your voice into the Piper nv’s speakers. This feature can come in handy if there is someone you need to talk to inside your home while you are away.

Canary Pro

The Canary Pro also comes with an app that is compatible with your iOS or Android devices. One significant difference between it and the Piper nv is that it comes with a browser interface for times when you do not have your smartphone with you. It is a bit bare and basic, but it does the job giving you the right amount of control on a desktop browser. On top of the smartphone and browser access, you can also use it on other platforms, particularly Apple Watches.

The companion app for the Canary Pro is intuitive, and it allows you to control multiple cameras from your phone. You could actually build a network of security cameras and use a single app to access them.

When it comes to storage, you can subscribe to their premium account allows you to record more video clips that you can review at a later time. This way, you do not need to be continually monitoring your cameras and let the motion detection features do the work for you.

Canary View

The Canary View’s companion mobile app is similar to that of the Pro. It is a bit limited but quite organized in making it easier for users. The app aims to minimize the number of taps you need to do to access a clip or a snapshot, and it does it well.

There is a notable feature that you will be able to find on the live stream view of your camera, and that is the emergency call button. This allows you to save the numbers for your local police, fire, or other emergency services so you can contact them right away in case of trouble.

You also get access to a web portal, but only if you get their cloud plan. Subscribing to it will open up a few additional features like two-way audio, live streaming on your browser, and incident support.

Canary Flex

You can also control the Flex using your smartphone with Canary’s app. It comes with similar features to the Pro and View making it a pretty versatile app. It’s responsive and quick, so you can navigate it quickly without worrying about lags.

A significant difference between the Flex and its larger counterparts is that it only comes with three modes rather than four. You get Home, Away, and Night that changes based on your location. It is also possible to adjust it manually so you can turn on Privacy mode whenever you are at home.
