Why Sleep Is So Important

Lack of sleep—or quality sleep—affects how we think, and the way we function or malfunction. No one wants to go about their day feeling irritable and fed up. These are typical outcomes of sleeplessness. Chronic sleep deprivation is even more of a concern. Quality slumber is essential for physical, mental, and emotional health and personal safety. Indeed, it’s as vital to wellbeing as nutrition and exercise.

What Is a Sleep Tracker?

A sleep-tracker is a wearable or non-wearable device that monitors slumber. The wearable types are lightweight gadgets that typically strap to wrists or ankles. The non-wearable trackers go under a pillow or sit on a nightstand. Neither type can replace polysomnography, which is a fancy name for a medical “sleep study.” Still, they offer some interesting data that you can use to enhance your sleep.

Sleep monitors can differ in what they do, but shared features often include:

  1. Sleep duration
  2. Sleep quality
  3. Sleep phases

Some products also take environmental factors into account. They measure the amount of light in the bedroom and the room’s temperature. Lifestyle is another feature of some gadgets. It works by analyzing the data you put into it and offers suggestions if there’s room for improvement.

OK. Let’s look at the three shared features of a sleep monitor in a little more detail.

Commercial Sleep Tracker Vs. Polysomnography

Polysomnography is a medical sleep study carried out in a controlled environment. It measures body and leg movements, eye activity, brain waves, heart rate, respiration, and blood oxygen levels. A commercial sleep tracker only monitors body movement, heart rate (wearable), and noise. However, consumer trackers are getting more sophisticated and capable all the time.

More than a Sleep Tracker

There are sleep-only trackers and multi-trackers. The latter offers a host of functions as well as sleep monitoring. These all-in-one gadgets are handy if you want to track physical activity, diet, heart rate, and other things. Many ‘hybrid’ devices work with Alexa. They also have built-in activities, goal setting functions, Bluetooth, and wireless connectivity. I include both types in the reviews section.

About My “Sleep Monitors Reviews” Guide

Below are 8 of the best sleep trackers available now. I’ve scrutinized dozens of products from all types and price ranges. These examples are not only personal preferences. I also took feedback from real users into account, along with the opinions of experts. The first sleep tracker reviews are the Editor’s Choice for the Best Budget toll, Best Value, and the Top Pick.

Sleep Monitors Comparison Table

1. K-berho Multi-Purpose Sleep Tracker | Best Budget

K-berho Multi-Purpose Sleep TrackerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

The K-berho Multi-Tracker gets the Editor’s Best Budget slot. It’s an affordable waterproof gadget with real-time monitoring. Users can observe their sleep, health, fitness, and more besides.

  • Best feature 1: Automatic sleep monitoring
  • Best feature 2: Multifunctional smart tracker
  • Plus points: App control, deep sleep, light sleep, and wake up tracking, fast charging, affordable
  • Minus points: Awkward to charge, some readings not exact, tiny instructions font

K-berho Multi-Purpose Tracker Highlights

K-berho’s Multi-Purpose Tracker is a feature-packed wearable band with an affordable price tag. It’s surprisingly resilient for a budget product and even has an IP68 waterproof rating. That means you can wear it in the bath or a swimming pool. The sleep functions monitor light and deep sleep hours and wake up times. You can view all data on a regular smartphone using the H Band app.

Other Features

You can get the K-berho in three colors, i.e., black, blue, and pink. The USB interface lets you plug the device into any computer or USB block to charge it. The charging time is fast at only 60 minutes.

Here’s a breakdown of the K-berho tracker main features:

  • Sleep tracking
  • Pedometer watch
  • Step and calorie counter
  • Bluetooth phone connectivity & interaction
  • Health tracker watch
  • Sedentary reminder
  • Remote camera control
  • Alarm clock
  • Countdown timer and stopwatch.
  • Physiological Period Reminder for women
  • Continuous 24/7 heart rate & Blood pressure monitoring

The Not So Good

Charging is straightforward, but it’s a tad annoying as you must remove the strap each time. The readings are reasonably accurate but not exact. Still, it’s a budget-end tracker, so try not to take the readings too seriously, especially blood pressure. You need a dedicated machine for that if you need to monitor hypertension. Lastly, the font used in the instruction booklet is painfully small.

Fitbit Inspire Sleep & Activity TrackerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

Fitbit makes the Editor’s Best Value pick with its Inspire Fitness Tracker. It’s the wearable type and includes both small and large bands to fit different size wrists and ankles.

  • Best feature 1: Sleep monitoring w/ bedtime reminders and silent alarm function
  • Best feature 2: Tracks all-day, all-night activity
  • Plus points: App control, light and durable, 2 colors, 2 bands, USB charging, long battery life
  • Minus points: Difficult to change bands, band hard to snap close, tiny readout

Fitbit Inspire Activity Tracker Highlights

This ultra-lightweight health and fitness tracker is durable, comfortable, and swim-proof. It displays data on a regular smartphone using the Fitbit® Mobile App. An example of a good night’s slumber might read Light Sleep 56%, Deep Sleep 18%, REM sleep 22%, and Awake Time 4%. The wearer can also set bedtime reminders and silent vibration alarms that don’t disturb others.

Other Features

Fitbit’s Inspire comes in two colors, i.e., black and sangria (a purplish red). The battery lasts up to 5 days on a single charge. Charging takes between 90–100 minutes.

Here’s a breakdown of the Fitbit Inspire main features:

  • Auto-tracks sleep w/ silent alarm
  • Tracks all-day activity
  • Tracks steps, distance
  • Tracks hourly activity, active minutes
  • Tracks calories burned
  • Call, text, and calendar alerts
  • Long 5-day battery life
  • Auto-records workouts w/ SmartTrack
  • On-screen dashboard
  • Intuitive touchscreen w/ backlit display
  • Acknowledged milestones

Fitbit Inspire HR

You can opt for the Fitbit Inspire HR (Heart Rate) if you need more features. The extras for that model include 24/7 heart rate tracking and real-time pace & distance with phone GPS. The HR model also has over 15 goal-based exercise modes.

The Not So Good

This tracker comes with 2 bands to fit different wrists and ankle sizes. The problem is it’s difficult to swap bands over, and they’re also tricky to snap closed once attached. The elastomer band issues are easily the most common gripes of this otherwise fantastic little tracker. Some people are sure to find the tiny readout a strain, especially stats for things like distance and step count.

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

Fitbit’s Versa 2 is the Editor’s Top Pick as it checks all the right boxes, and it looks fantastic to boot. Keep reading to see what makes this bestselling health & fitness smartwatch so special.
• Best feature 1: Detailed sleep score with personal insights
• Best feature 2: Always-on display option
• Plus points: Alexa built-in, health & fitness tracking, long battery life, phone notifications
• Minus points: Some tracking data is slightly off, no edge-to-edge display
Fitbit Versa 2 Tracker Highlights
Fitbit Versa 2 is well-made, beautiful, and it has a nice feel to it. This smartwatch is water-resistant up to 50 meters, which makes it swim-proof. The Sleep Score reflects the quality of your slumber. It works by analyzing heart rate (HR), total sleep time, and restless periods. The Versa 2 also tracks the 3 sleep stages, i.e., Light, Deep, and Rapid Eye Movement (REM).
Other Features
Fitbit’s Versa 2 comes in 6 colors, Black, Bordeaux, Navy, Copper Rose, Gray Mist, and Gray Stone. Its battery can last up to 6 days on a single charge, but less if you use the always-on display. The charging time is around 2 hours.

Here’s a breakdown of the Fitbit Versa 2 smartwatch tracker main features:

  • Amazon Alexa built-in
  • Color touchscreen
  • Compatible with 100s of apps
  • Syncs to different computer operating systems
  • 2–5 minute guided breathing exercises
  • Health tracking for women
  • SmartTrack auto-detects and records stats for specific exercises
  • Cardio fitness
  • Fitbit Pay for contactless payments
  • 100’s of clock faces to choose from
  • Intuitive Fitbit dashboard

The Not So Good

Everything you need to access is at your fingertips, but the menu navigation is so-so. Novice users may find it a tad frustrating at first. Some of the tracking features are slightly off the mark, with the biggest complaint being step counts. The screen appears large, but the display is smaller than you’d expect. That’s because it’s not edge-to-edge, and there’s a thick black border around the outer face.

4. Withings Under Mattress Sleep Tracking Pad

Withings Under Mattress Sleep Tracking PadView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Meet the Withings Sleep Tracking Pad. It’s a complete sleep monitoring device that fits under the mattress. You only need to set it up once, then forget about it.

  • Best feature 1: Dedicated sleep tracking device
  • Best feature 2: Monitors all three sleep cycles
  • Plus points: Non-wearable, tracks heart rate, detects snoring, WiFi, home automation
  • Minus points: Some users may find it fiddly to set up

Withings Mattress Tracking Pad Highlights

There’s nothing to wear or remember with the Withings Mattress Tracking Pad. It’s a terrific tool for those who want advanced sleep cycle analysis and tracking from an app. It collects and analyzes data for the 3 sleep stages (light, deep, and REM), but that’s not all. This device also tracks your heart rate, snoring, breathing disturbances, and presents you with a daily Sleep Score.

It’s also possible to use the sleep tracking pad to automate specific tasks. For example, turn the bedroom lights on and off automatically at set times. Another use is to auto-adjust the thermostat at times based on your requirements. This sleep tracker works with Alexa using the command, Alexa, ask Withings.” Alexa can tell you your daily, weekly, or yearly sleep trends.

The Not So Good

This mattress tracking pad needs to be in a perfect position to report accurate data. The instructions are vague on this issue, and the thickness of a mattress may also play a role. Some users may have to move it around before they get precise data. The easiest way to test accuracy is to look at the reported hours of sleep. If the data showed 5 hours when you had 8, reposition it and try again.

5. Withings Steel HR Hybrid Smartwatch

Withings Steel HR Hybrid SmartwatchView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

This review is for a Withings wearable product. It’s the company’s Steel HR Hybrid Smartwatch that boasts an incredible battery life and 24/7 tracking.

  • Best feature 1: Sleep tracking with daily Sleep Score reports
  • Best feature 2: Rugged build, exceptional craftsmanship
  • Plus points: 12 colors, in-depth reports, water-resistant, long battery life, auto-tracks, GPS
  • Minus points: Cheap wrist band, watch crystal is not scratch-resistant

Withings Steel HR Smartwatch Highlights

The craftsmanship and build-quality of this smartwatch are exceptional. It has a rugged 316L stainless steel case that oozes quality. Moreover, it’s water-resistant to 50 meters. That means the wearer can swim, shower, or venture out in a downpour without worry. Sleep tracking monitors duration, depth, interruptions, sleep cycles, and overnight heart rate.

This smartwatch uses a gentle vibrating alarm to wake you up at the ideal time in your sleep cycle. You can then view your Sleep Score to see how you slept during the night.

Other Features

Withings Steel HR Smartwatch comes in 12 colors and offers several choices in wrist bands. The battery lasts up to 25 days on a single charge. Charging takes around 120 minutes (2 hours).

Here’s a breakdown of the Withings Steel HR Smartwatch tracker main features:

  • All-day, all-night heart rate monitoring
  • Full workout mode
  • Smartphone notifications
  • Alexa compatible
  • Automatic synchronization
  • Smart wakeup
  • Connected GPS maps exercise routes

The Not So Good

The silicone non-adjustable wrist band looks cheap and tacky on this quality watch. I’m surprised the company didn’t pair it with one of their other, better-looking straps. It’s easy to switch bands, but it’s an inconvenience and an extra cost. A more serious letdown is that the watch crystal is not scratch-resistant, and it tends to mark quite easily.

6. Fitbit One Wireless Sleep & Activity Tracker

Fitbit One Wireless Sleep & Activity TrackerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The Fitbit One is a tiny, discrete activity and sleep tracker. It auto-syncs to any modern mobile device or computer. The small form makes this lowkey, multipurpose tracker portable and versatile.

  • Best feature 1: Sleep tracking & alarms
  • Best feature 2: Clips easily onto belts, pockets, and bras
  • Plus points: Auto-syncs, tracks steps, distance, and calories burned, long battery life
  • Minus points: Not swim-proof, easy to lose or misplace

Fitbit One Wireless Tracker Highlights

Fitbit’s One Activity & Sleep tracker comes with a clip case so that you can attach it to clothing. It’s ideal for wearing on pockets, belts, and bra straps. There’s also a Velcro wrist strap that lets you wear the tracker as you sleep. You can view the sleep data via a computer or mobile app. The data includes bedtime, wake time, total sleep time, and how long you took to fall asleep.

The website sleep screen shows how many instances you rouse during the night, what times, and for how long. It gives you a useful Sleep Efficiency Score too, measured as a percentage. You get similar data from the smartphone app, though it’s not quite as detailed.

The Activity Tracking includes steps taken, distance traveled, floors climbed, and calories burned. The Fitbit One comes in two colors, i.e., Black and Burgundy. Its battery life is impressive at 2 weeks on a full charge. Charging takes around 120 minutes (2 hours).

The Not So Good

This device is water-resistant but only against sweat, rain, and light splashes. It’s not swim-proof like most of the wearables on this page. The tiny size of this device is both a pro and a con. It can be a disadvantage because it’s easy to lose or forget about. It won’t survive in the pocket of a garment that goes through a washing machine. Lastly, some users find the sleep band a little uncomfortable.

7. POLAR IGNITE Fitness & Sleep Tracker

POLAR IGNITE Fitness & Sleep TrackerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The penultimate review is for the Polar Ignite Fitness Smartwatch. It has a round face and the look of a traditional dress watch, but it’s so much more than an attractive timepiece.

  • Best feature 1: Sleep Plus Stage tracking feature w/ Sleep Score
  • Best feature 2: Nightly Recharge Recovery Measurement
  • Plus points: Training guide, guided breathing, heart rate, GPS, calories, swim metrics
  • Minus points: Awkward touchscreen, hard to read in bright daylight

POLAR IGNITE Tracker Highlights

The Polar Ignite is quite an expensive tracker that’s lightweight and feature-packed. The watch has a color touchscreen, a 1-button interface, and built-in GPS. It’s made from polymer and stainless steel materials and is water-resistant up to 30m. The Sleep Plus Stage monitors all 3 sleep phases (light, deep, and REM). Wearers can view daily sleep feedback, along with a personal Sleep Score.

Another neat feature is Polar’s Nightly Recharge that measures your recovery throughout the night. You can see how well you recuperate from physical activities and make any changes if necessary.

Other Features

Polar’s Ignite comes in six colorful designs. They include Black & Copper, Black & Silver, Orange & Black, Pink & Rose, White & Silver, and Yellow & Black. The battery should last for 17 hours in Training Mode, and 5 days in Watch Mode. Charging the Ignite takes about 120 minutes (2 hours).

Here’s a breakdown of the Polar Ignite watch tracker main features:

  • Sports and activity tracking (5 features)
  • Stats & training (6 features)
  • Focus, health and recovery (5 features)
  • Notifications via smartphone connection

The watch has a plethora of neat tracking features for both health and fitness. You get calories burned, heart rate monitoring, guided breathing exercises, and lots of fitness activity programs with stats.

The Not So Good

The touchscreen can be awkward to swipe due to its lack of sensitivity. That’s a surprise considering the cost of this smartwatch. It responds best when it’s squeaky clean, so that means regular wiping before use. The display can also be hard to read in bright daylight. Lastly, the 7 to 10-day battery life is an exaggeration, with most users reporting 4 to 5 days on average.

8. EMFIT QS Under Mattress Sleep Tracker

EMFIT QS Under Mattress Sleep TrackerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The last review is for a contact-free under-the-mattress sleep tracker by EMFIT QS. It’s equipped with Heart-Rate-Variability (HRV) that analyses your recovery rate and readiness.

  • Best feature 1: Contact-free sleep and health monitor
  • Best feature 2: Heart-Rate-Variability (HRV) analysis
  • Plus points: Easy to set up and use, ultra-thin sensor, highly accurate data
  • Minus points: Not portable, no app, lacks suggestions or action plans

EMFIT QS+ACTIVE Tracker Highlights

This product is for anyone who wants a dedicated health and sleep tracker. It’s a sophisticated tool yet super easy to set up and dead simple to use. The ultra-thin sensor goes under the mattress, so there’s nothing to wear. Nor do you need to switch it ON and OFF. It offers detailed data on sleep quality and recovery progression. This powerful insight can help you make well-informed lifestyle adjustments.

The data analysis below is highly accurate and clinically validated:

  • Measures heart & breathing rate
  • Heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Sleep cycles (light, deep, REM, and awake)
  • Movement activity (tossing & turning)
  • Time spent in sleep and in the bed

The collected data is in a clear and easy-to-understand format. You can view your health and sleep reports in the web application on PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

The Not So Good

You can’t wear the EMFIT QS+ACTIVE, and it needs a power outlet and WiFi connection to function. That makes it much less portable than app-controlled wearable sleep trackers. That should only be an issue for those who travel around and want to track their sleep wherever they go. Also, there’s little in the way of useful suggestions for sleep improvement based on the gathered data.
