#1 Best Overall – Chamberlain MyQ

Chamberlain MyQView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

If you already have a capable garage door opener you’re satisfied with, the most effective way to make it smarter is by using a garage door controller. Chamberlain’s MyQ is hands down the best of the bunch, offering widespread compatibility with openers as well as 3rd party smart devices. It’s also by far the easiest to install and won’t even cost you an arm and a leg!

Plays Well with Everyone

The MyQ consists of a base unit and a sensor. You install the base unit by placing it onto a supplied bracket that screws into your garage’s ceiling. The base unit needs to be plugged in and the sensor attached to your door in an upright position, and that’s it – no hardwiring of any kind required! The installation is usually a hassle-free 20-minute job that requires little technical expertise, which is refreshing considering Chamberlain’s other products.

Once you’ve connected the base unit to your smartphone and paired it with the sensor, you can start controlling the garage door opener remotely from literally anywhere. The app’s design is simplistic – the home screen shows a garage door that’s either open or closed and informs you how long it’s been that way. Digging a little deeper lets you see a timeline of events and set up alerts when the door has been open for too long,

The real strength of the MyQ lies in its wide compatibility. You can connect it to a Nest Smart Learning Thermostat to put the thermostat into Away mode each time the door is closed for example. It supports Wink and IFTTT as well, giving you control over other smart items like floodlights and security cameras when the MyQ is activated, or receive text messages if the door’s status changes.

What We Didn’t Like

In an unprecedented move, Chamberlain has decided to charge a monthly subscription fee for using IFTTT and voice activation via Google Assistant. While the price is a measly $1/month, these are services practically everyone else offers free of charge.

#2 Best Value – Chamberlain B970

Chamberlain B970View on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

Is your 30-year-old garage door opener on its last breath and making a ruckus to boot? Replacement is the obvious solution, but why not double down while you’re at it and make your new model a smart one? The B970 is one of Chamberlain’s most powerful and well-received models. It can lift any garage door you hook it up to, has a belt drive you’ll barely hear over the door itself, and comes with MyQ already built-in for maximum convenience & compatibility.

The Whisper-quiet Powerhouse

The B970 is equipped with a 1 ¼ horsepower motor. As garage opener doors go this one is truly a beast and is able to lift even bulky oak wood doors with ease. Installation should be handled either by an experienced DIY-er or a professional, but once the opener is set up controlling it either through the keypad, remote, or the app is easy.

The keypad has a bright screen that lets you see the temperature, time, and current status of the B970’s backup battery. You can also use it to change your lock codes and set up an automatic timer that will close the garage door after 1-10 minutes. The two remotes you also get with the B970 can open the door or turn the B970’s light on from as far as 1,500 feet away. They even have a clip for easier attachment to your car’s sun visors.

Since this is a belt drive, expect truly quiet operation. Chamberlain is no slouch when it comes to safety either as they’ve included two infrared sensors which pick up on even slight movements and prevent the door from closing, preventing injury.

Are There Drawbacks?

Yes, but they’re situational. You’ll either have to pay someone to install the B970 or be prepared to spend a few frustrating hours doing it yourself. It’s the most expensive item on our list and isn’t exactly cheap as full-fledged garage door openers go either.

#3 Gogogate 2 Smart Garage Door Controller

Gogogate 2 Smart Garage Door ControllerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The Gogogate 2 garage door controller kit is a comprehensive device that expands the functionality of traditional garage door openers exponentially. It’s relatively easy to install, comes with a responsive sensor, and has an app that grants you nuanced control over the garage door. Best of all, Gogogate 2 supports as many as three garage doors at once, making it potentially the most cost-effective device on the list.

The Gogogateway to Your Smart Home

While not as easy to install as the MyQ, the Gogogate doesn’t require as much knowledge or patience from the user as installing a garage door opener does. You need to wire the base unit to either your existing opener or the button that controls it. Three sets of cables run out from the unit which control the raising/lowering of a garage door each. The kit also contains a sensor that attaches to the door. It sends readings of the door’s position to the base unit and has a built-in temperature sensor too.

The Gogogate app takes advantage of the sensor’s readings to show you the door’s current status and ambient temperature. If you connect a camera to it through IFTTT, the standard status picture you’re greeted with when opening the app will be replaced by a live feed of the camera. You can store up to 24-hours’ worth of clips on Gogogate’s cloud, which will cost you a mere $30 for three years.

Within the app, you get to see an overview of the opener’s activity, set schedules up, and customize alarm settings. There’s also the option of assigning different privileges to up to 10 users (more if you pay a monthly fee). You can track each user’s usage history, grant them access during specific parts of the day, or block them from opening the garage door altogether.

What Could Be Improved?

The Gogogate app is a bit underwhelming considering everything this smart controller can actually do. For instance, both geofencing and voice activation are supported, but you’ll need to download and use IFTTT recipes to be able to make use of them. Users whose Wi-Fi networks have multiple access ports might have trouble during initial pairing since the Gogogate will take some time deciding on how to connect.

#4 Genie MachForce Screw Drive 2 HPc Garage Door Opener

Genie MachForce Screw Drive 2 HPc Garage Door OpenerView HomeDepot

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

There aren’t many alternatives to chamberlain’s Wi-Fi garage door openers. One that manages to be almost as good however is the MachForce screw drive made by Genie. It packs one of the most powerful motors on the market, doesn’t make as much noise as a chain drive, and comes with Genie’s proprietary smartphone solution, Aladdin Connect.

Smart, Fast, Powerful

The subtitle perfectly describes the MachForce in a nutshell. The opener’s most prominent feature is its 2-horsepower motor which drives a highly durable screw drive that controls your door at a brisk pace. Genie claims that their screw drive is twice as fast as others, and testing it against Chamberlain’s models reveals that they aren’t too far off the mark. At such speeds, it is understandably a little less quiet than belt drives, but you’ll still be able to use it in the morning without waking up anyone in an adjacent room.

The world of garage door openers isn’t exactly renowned for aesthetics, and it’s hard to tell Genie’s model apart from Chamberlains’ if you aren’t paying attention. Accessories are also very similar – two 3-button remotes you can reprogram as well as a wall console. No keyless keypad this time around though. As with Chamberlain’s openers, the MachForce beeps and starts flashing before it’s about to open/close the door remotely.

What you do get as part of the deal is Wi-Fi integration thanks to Aladdin Connect. Setting the app up requires you to scan the opener’s QR code or enter its serial number and pair it with your Wi-Fi. You can then control, name, and assign icons to three individual doors. Other in-app options include setting schedules & closing timers as well as user control. You can invite other users to install the app and then give them virtual passkeys that can let them into the garage for a limited amount of time, or indefinitely.

What Should Be Improved?

The MechForce’s most glaring fault is the lack of any kind of smart home integration, forcing you to be content with Aladdin Connect’s limited features. Installation is as complex as you’d expect and even made more confusing by the vague manual.

#5 Momentum Wifi Garage Door Opener Controller

Momentum Wifi Garage Door Opener ControllerView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

We’ve already seen how useful it is to pair a camera with your garage door opener. Wouldn’t it be nice if the controller you did this with was itself a camera? Momentum thinks along the same lines and its garage door opener is a versatile gadget that boasts excellent video quality along with easy installation and a good app. Too bad it only supports the Nest thermostat, else it would have deserved a higher place on our list.

A Capable Security Camera That Controls Your Garage Door

Although its primary function is to let you control the opener via Wi-Fi, this controller is a full-fledged security camera with impressive features for its price range. The 720p resolution is crisp and balanced, while its 110-degree angle provides a good overview of the door and everything beneath / in front of it. You don’t even need to turn your garage door opener’s light on to record usable footage as the Momentum comes equipped with IR LEDs that enable good-quality night vision.

Installation is about as easy as with the Gogogate. You attach the camera to your opener via double-sided adhesive or a magnet at its base, connect two cables to corresponding screws on the opener, and pair the controller with the app. While you’re at it, pair your Nest thermostat too since you’ll be able to toggle its Home/Away modes and check up on your home’s temperature through the controller’s app.

There are three main sections in the app – camera, garage, and activity. “Camera” activates a live feed of the camera from which you can save video clips and take pictures. These are saved either to an SD card or on Momentum’s cloud for $5/month. “Garage” shows you the door’s status, another live feed, and lets you control the door. The “Activity” panel shows you an overview of notifications concerning the door’s operation and a gallery of videos/screenshots.

“Rules” is another screen that isn’t as obvious. It offers a set of IFTTT-like conditions & actions from which you create rules the controller can follow like sending push notifications whenever the door is open.

What We Didn’t Like

Momentum still has a ways to go with smart home integration as only supporting a single thermostat is too little. Each time the motion sensor is triggered or the door opened a video clip can be recorded. These are a limited duration and 20 seconds need to pass before another can be recorded, potentially causing you to miss out on important events.

#6 Best Budget Option – Chamberlain B550

Chamberlain B550View on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

Homeowners who have lighter metal garage doors can save a decent amount of cash if they buy the Chamberlain B550, the B970’s smaller cousin. The two units are practically identical as far as controls, smart home integration, and installation woes are concerned, so you aren’t missing out on anything major if you know that this less powerful unit can handle your garage doors.

B970 Light

If not for the different decals showing its horsepower and model number, you’d be hard pressed to tell the B550 apart from the more powerful model. Its 1/2 HP motor can lift standard double-wide aluminum doors quickly while barely making a sound, just make sure that they aren’t heavier than 300 pounds. Its height is limited to 7 feet, but you can raise this if you buy a separate extension kit.

Safety & security features abound as the B550 has both infrared and pressure sensors which will keep the door from rolling down if they sense resistance beneath it. If you’re closing this or any other door remotely using MyQ, the opener will wait for 15 seconds while emitting a warning beep that ought to make anyone aware of the potential danger. You get the same remotes and keyless pad issued with the B970. Both can be locked to prevent entry if you ever misplace a key.

MyQ is built into the B550 and works like a charm. Apart from the numerous compatible services listed above, you can enable Apple’s HomeKit and Siri control too. The downside is that you’ll have to purchase a separate bridge, adding to the overall cost.

What’s Bad About It?

You probably guessed it by now; the B550 suffers from the same downside as the 970 – potentially troublesome installation. The price is more reasonable this time around, but the range of door weights and material types this model can work with is more limited.
