How Window & Door Sensors Work

Wired window alarm sensors work with something called a reed switch (contact) and a magnet. The switch and magnet are two separate parts. The reed switch attaches to the window frame and the magnet to the pane. The window is in shut status when the magnet is closest to the switch. An open window pulls the magnet away from its switch, and the status changes to open. That’s it.

The closer the reed switch is to the magnet, the better. It’s most effective at around the 1” mark, but the maker’s instructions will give specifics. Wired window and door sensors are simple DIY projects that usually take a few minutes to fit (not including the wiring). They’re cheap, reliable, and effective. It makes sense to use window sensors on all the vulnerable intrusion points around the home.

How to Install a Window Sensor

Many window sensors come with double-sided tape for easy installation. Make sure the surfaces are clean before applying either piece. Proper alignment is vital, so it’s necessary to follow the maker’s instructions. Most of these gadgets—though not all—have visible markers to make correct placement foolproof. The only downside to wired sensors is that they need connecting to a central control panel.

A lot of people still prefer wired security systems despite the inconvenience. That’s because they’re more reliable and there’s less that can go wrong. Okay, they’re not as flexible as wireless setups, and there may be restrictions on where you can go with them. Even so, a decent wired security alarm arrangement is easy to maintain and should last for many years. It’s also less susceptible to hacking.

About My ‘Wired Window Alarm Sensors’ Guide

There are 10 affordable products listed below. The reason for these mini-reviews is to give a bit more information on the products than the sales pages offer. Window and door sensors are simple gadgets, and most do precisely what they’re supposed to. These products should all work with modern Access Control Systems (ACS) and Burglar Alarms.

Wired Window Alarm Sensors Comparison Table

1. INTELLid 1 Pcs Wired Window Sensors | Best Budget

INTELLid 1 Pcs Wired Window SensorsView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The Best Budget wired window and door sensor goes to the INTELLid contact position switch. It works with most burglar alarm types and Access Control Systems (ACS).

INTELLid Wired Door Sensors Highlights

This ABS surface-mount sensor is simple to install and reliable. It uses a built-in magnetic reed system that reports closed status at around 3/4” Thus, open window status is greater than 3/4″. That’s when the sensor notifies the ACS or burglar alarm, which then reacts according to your setup. Likewise, the sensor reports when its status returns to closed.

There are not any product dimensions on the page, only the package. That’s an issue if you need the sensor to match any existing ones so that it doesn’t stand out. The unit tends to be on the larger size of average. Be sure to contact the seller if you need the product’s exact dimensions.

SECO-LARM Overhead Door SensorView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

Our Best Value pick goes to the SM-226L-3Q Seco-Larm, which is an overhead magnetic door sensor. It’s a low-profile, heavy-duty switch encased in a rugged aluminum cover.

SECO-LARM Door Sensor Highlights

Consider the SM-226L-3Q if you need a product that can take heavy vehicles running over it. The magnet is encased in heavy-duty ABS on an L-shaped bracket. Stainless steel cable encases the wire leads for ultimate protection. It’s the superior build-quality that makes this alarm sensor quite pricey compared to others. It should last for many years when properly mounted.

It’s also worth noting that SECO-LARM’s overhead garage door sensor supports both systems. That is, Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC).

3. KERUI Siren W/ Window/Door Sensors | Top Pick

KERUI Siren W/ Window/Door SensorsView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

The top pick goes to a comprehensive alarm kit that includes three window alarm sensors and a 110dB horn. It’s a highly-affordable setup that only takes a little basic DIY to install.

KERUI Siren W/ Door Sensor Highlights

A 23A 12V battery is all it takes to power the KERUI Siren burglar alarm system. Its 3 window/door sensors come equipped with sticky pads for quick and easy fitting. The only wiring comes with the small horn, but the rest of this kit is a wireless setup. Some users may need to extend the horn’s cable, though, as it’s quite short. The box also contains 2 remotes and a PIR motion sensor.

This system is expandable up to 30 window/door sensors despite its low cost. You can also add up to 4 doorbells and 8 remotes if needed. The alarm activates once a window opens to 0.03” (1mm). The only negative is that the alarm is not very loud with a single siren setup.

You can have three YXQ Door Window Magnetic Sensor Switches for only a few dollars. They might be cheap, but they do the job as promised in the product description.

YXQ MC 32 Window/Door Sensor Highlights

These are neat compact devices with a fast response. This product is super-easy to use and makes an excellent replacement for faulty window and door switches. They trip at around the 1/2″ mark from the magnetic contact. The only gripe is that the wire’s a little on the short side.

It’s worth noting that there has been some misinformation on the Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) status in the ad. Be sure to check which it is prior to purchase and again when wiring.

Gufastore offers its 10pcs Surface magnetic window and door switch pack for less than 15 dollars. The units are quick to install and work seamlessly with existing burglar alarm systems.

These are excellent quality magnetic induction switches. They will serve you well if you want to replace older, worn-out sensors or secure any new window installations. Editor’s Rating: 4.2/5

This product is by Uxcell, and it’s another affordable 10-piece pack. The company’s magnetic reed door switches here boast precise detection and an ultra-sensitive response.

Uxcell Wired Door Contact Sensor Highlights

The RC-36 is a recessed normally closed (NC) wired security window/door switch. They’re made from rugged white ABS thermoplastic material. That means they won’t corrode, and they have a high-temperature resistance. The wired sensors are ideal for metal doors and windows in particular. They are also the right choice if you have a business that uses Commercial Card Access Systems.

The only fault with these switches is that the wires seem unusually thin. That doesn’t affect the functionality of the switches, but skinny wires need extra care when stripping.

9. Potter Amseco ODC-59A Overhead Door Sensor

Potter Amseco ODC-59A Overhead Door SensorView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The penultimate product is for the Potter Amseco ODC-59A switch with an adjustable L bracket. It’s primarily for rolling door types, but you can use it anywhere with a little creative imagination.

Potter Amseco Overhead Door Sensor Highlights

It’s worth pointing out that the Potter Amseco ODC-59A has a rugged stainless steel armored cable. That’s essential for use with rolling overhead doors and shutters as it guarantees longevity. The reed switch is hermetically sealed, which means it’s 100% protected and airtight. The operating gap is around 2”. Another thing worth noting is that this product is UL and ULC listed.

The downside is the short wires, and it’s a common complaint with window and door sensors. There can never be “too much” wire since it only takes a nanosecond to cut to length.

10. Honeywell Ademco Overhead Door Contacts

Honeywell Ademco Overhead Door ContactsView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

Last on the list is another quality overhead door contact. This one is a 2-pack product sold by Honeywell. Installation is quick and painless thanks to the adjustable magnet and L bracket.

Honeywell Ademco 958 Door Sensor Highlights

The unit is incredibly well-made and should last a lifetime. It’s ideally for use with Honeywell’s own security systems, so check with the seller if you want to use it with another brand. The 958 door contact here operates on an NC or Normally Closed (NC) loop.

Honeywell’s resilient Ademco Door Sensor uses epoxy sealing to protect it from impact and moisture. It’s a solid magnetic switch with a higher price tag than others on this page. That’s because its hardy shock-absorbing design helps to protect the reed from flex. It also keeps the housing safe from wear and accidental damage.
