8 Best Android Microphones of 2019

Posted on

There’s very little a modern smartphone can’t do, but they still fall short when it comes to audio. That’s due to a lack of space, tiny size, restricted frequency range, and fixed positions. They do excel in camera quality, though, and many are as good as or better than some cheaper DSLRs. But stunning video is often let down by poor quality sound. An external Android microphone can change all that.

How to Connect a Mic to a Smartphone

There are two favored methods to connect an external mic to an Android smartphone. One way is to plug it directly into the 3.5mm headphone/mic jack. The other uses a Micro USB port or similar if the device supports it. Wireless mics can also connect via Bluetooth, but that can be spotty and limiting. So, the most common connection type—for now—is to use the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Problem with Headphone Jacks

It’s all so easy—in theory. But there can be a problem attaching a microphone’s 3.5mm plug to the headphone jack of a smartphone. That’s because some Android devices don’t recognize external mics. They see them as headphones. That can be frustrating because the audio jack on the Android phone should be for both. Don’t worry—there is a straightforward solution.

A simple adapter cable can solve the Android external mic problem. These adapters ‘split’ the smartphone’s audio connections into individual jacks. That means one wire with two inputs (star-shaped). One end has the male 3.5mm TRRS jack plug that goes into the Android device. The other has two female inputs marked ‘Headphone’ and ‘Microphone.’ That’s all there is to it.

The DuKabel 3.5mm Headphone & Mic Plug Adapter is an excellent example of a splitter cable. It’s worth noting that some mics now come with a dedicated TRRS 3.5mm jack. An adapter like the one above lets you attach any mic whatever its connection type.

Wired Mics Vs. Wireless

Not all external mics for Android are the wired variety. WiFi is out, but there’s an increase in Bluetooth microphones. Even so, wireless mics still need a receiver to work, and that means there’s more ‘potential’ for something to go wrong. Lavalier or lapel mics are the most favored wireless options for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Reliability and audio quality is not generally as dependable as wired mics, though. Despite this, Bluetooth headphones with integrated mics are becoming quite popular now.

Summing Up

There are plenty of external microphone choices available for Android. And yes, the audio quality is far better than the built-in ones, even at the budget-end. Android lags behind iOS when it comes to software app support and compatibility. Don’t be too put off. If you want to enhance your Android audio, then you can do precisely that. It’s quick, easy, and prices start from only a few dollars.

About My ‘Android Microphone’ Guide

I looked through dozens of Android microphone choices before coming up with a shortlist of 8. The products reviewed are some of the current favorites as per real user feedback. Experts in the industry also rate these smartphone-compatible microphones highly. There are others, but the ones here are all excellent examples of external mics for use with Android smart devices.

Use the table below to navigate to the reviews that interest you. The first three are the Editor’s Choice for Best Budget smartphone mic, the Best Value, and the Top Pick.

Android Microphones Comparison Table

1. PowerDeWise Pro Mic for Android | Best Budget

PowerDeWise Pro Mic for AndroidView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

The Best Budget Android microphone goes to the PowerDeWise clip-on lavalier. It’s a brilliant little mic for first-time users who want to improve their audio.

  • Best feature 1: Easy-to-use, affordable smartphone mic
  • Best feature 2: Special adapter for PCs, audio recorders, and DSLR cameras
  • Plus points: Plug-n-play, extension cord, cable Velcro, wind muffs, soft carry case, value
  • Minus points: Not professional-grade as the ad suggests, thin cables

PowerDeWise Pro Lapel Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Most Android smartphones and other devices, Windows laptops, and PCs (adapter included), Apple iPhones from 2007–2015 (iPhone 6s), most iPod & iPads w/ 3.5mm port.

The PowerDeWise lavalier is a significant step-up from the built-in mics of Android phones. It’s a plug-n-play product that makes using it child’s play. This mic works across a broad range of devices as well as Google and Apple smartphones. It comes with a few handy extras too. They include a 5.5ft extension cable with Velcro ties, a rotating clip, 4 to 3-pin adapter, and two wind muffs.

There’s also a soft pouch in the box to keep the mic and its accessories together. It’s hard to find another lapel mic for smartphones that offers so much. That’s why it continues to sell well.

The Not So Good

It’s important to note that this is an entry-level lapel-type microphone. It’s exceptional value, but not professional-grade as the seller suggests. There wouldn’t be any need to spend more on costlier products if it was. Despite that, the audio quality is a huge improvement to all built-in mics. The cables seem a little thin and flimsy, and so need handling with care.

2. Movo VXR10 Smartphone/DSLR Mic | Best Value

Movo VXR10 Smartphone/DSLR MicView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone is the Editor’s Choice for Best Value Android mic. It’s another favorite smartphone and smart device mic for those who want to transform their audio.

  • Best feature 1: Super-easy to set up and use shotgun microphone
  • Best feature 2: Works with all devices that use 3.5mm inputs
  • Plus points: All-metal build, compact and light, shock mount, cardioid polar pattern, extras
  • Minus points: Flimsy shockmount, fragile dead cat wind muff

Movo VXR10 Smartphone Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Android OS smartphones, iPhones, Android/Apple laptops, tablets, camcorders, some DSLR cameras, GoPros action cameras, audio recorders, and others.

Movo’s VXR10 is a universal directional shotgun microphone for Android smartphones. It’s also compatible with any other device and OS that uses a 3.5mm input. The mic’s cardioid pattern picks up audio from the sound source while minimizing background noise. That lets you zoom in on the voice, musical instruments, or whatever else is in front of the VXR10 capsule.

This compact lightweight mic has a rugged, all-metal aluminum build. You can see it, but its 1.8 oz., weight is barely noticeable when mounted onto a smartphone or other device. There’s even an integrated shockmount to keep handling noise to a bare minimum.
Extras include a furry dead cat windshield and a soft carry case. Also in the box is a TRS cable for DSLR cameras and recorders, and a 3.5mm TRRS for smartphones and tablets, etc.

The Not So Good

The shockmount works well, but it’s flimsy. By that, I mean it looks as though it could easily break with a few knocks. That’s a shame considering the rugged build of the mic it supports. Another letdown is the included furry wind muff. It works okay, but it too is fragile and may come apart with rough handling. A quality dead cat is not expensive, so my advice would be to get a better one.

3. COMICA 6CH Pro Smartphone Mic System | Top Pick

COMICA 6CH Pro Smartphone Mic SystemView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

The Top Pick Android microphone goes to the Comica CVM-WS50. It’s a 6-channel UHF wireless lavalier microphone system for modern smartphones.

  • Best feature 1: Long working distance
  • Best feature 2: Real-time audio monitoring
  • Plus points: 6CH, metal holder, LCD screen, volume control, rechargeable receiver battery
  • Minus points: Mic batteries extra, built-in receiver battery, Android needs 3rd party app

COMICA Pro Smartphone Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Android and iOS smartphones (check seller for updated compatibility).

Comica’s CVM-WS50 smartphone wireless mic system is for those who demand high-quality audio. It has an incredible working distance of 197ft or 60 meters. You can mount a smartphone to a tripod or other support and move around freely while maintaining perfect audio. The system comes with a bright LED screen that displays lots of useful data. That includes channels, audio status, and power level, etc.

The 6 switchable channels are invaluable for situations when one may have interference. Real-time audio monitoring is a godsend. It lets you closely monitor audio quality and time status to ensure you finish recording on time. Another welcome feature is the adjustable smartphone clamp and a mini-ball fully-adjustable head. The 360° rotation and 45° tilt gives the freedom to be creative with shoots.

Other features worth mention are the stepless volume control and a USB Charging Interface.

The Not So Good

COMICA’s mic system for smartphones is quite expensive, even though it offers exceptional value. But it’s disappointing that no AA batteries are included with the product. If you don’t have batteries ready, you can’t be up and running right away. It’s a minor gripe, but still annoying considering the price. And the receiver has a rechargeable battery—which is good—but it’s nonreplaceable as it’s built-in.

Android users must rely on a third-party app to use the system. Lastly, the CVM-WS50 is incompatible with the Google Pixel Android smartphone.

4. PoP Voice Professional Lapel Mic for Android

PoP Voice Professional Lapel Mic for AndroidView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Meet the Pop Voice lavalier microphones for Android smartphones and other devices. Clip-on mics don’t get much cheaper than this puppy, but is it any good? Let’s find out.

  • Best feature 1: Excellent value, low-budget clip-on mic
  • Best feature 2: Broad device compatibility
  • Plus points: Good average audio, metal clip, foam wind muffs, long mic cable, soft pouch
  • Minus points: Not “pro-grade” despite description, doesn’t work with all smartphones

PoP Voice Pro Android Lapel Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Android smartphones, Google, Windows Smartphone, Windows PC, and laptops w/ adapter. Apple iPhone, iPod, iPad, Touch, and Apple MacBook, etc.

Fact: This product has better audio than tinny built-in microphones. It’s an ideal first external mic for anyone who wants to improve their smartphone audio. This model has an omnidirectional polar pattern that picks up sound from a 360° angle. And the small all-metal clip fastens to clothes and holds firm even with the thinnest of fabrics.

Truly Versatile Microphone

The Pop Voice works on most devices with a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s a plug-n-play mic, so there are no drivers to install or settings to play around with. Just insert the TRRS plug and start to record. The standard cable is a little under 5ft, but there are longer ones available if you need them.

You’re not chained to Android smartphones with this mic. It has broad compactivity, and that includes computers using the included PC adapter. A few welcome extras in the box include two foam wind muffs a carrying/storage case, and Velcro cable ties.

The Not So Good

Don’t let the word ‘Professional’ fool you in the description as this is not a pro-grade product. It’s an entry-level budget mic that produces better audio than the built-in ones. But it can’t come close to the quality of a high-end microphone. Also, it has broad compatibility but may not work well with every Android smartphone. Interested buyers should contact the seller for a compatibility check if unsure.

5. Comica CVM-VS08 Condenser Mic for Android

Comica CVM-VS08 Condenser Mic for AndroidView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The fifth review goes to another Comica product. This mic is the company’s CVM-VS08. It’s a shotgun directional microphone designed for use with Android and iOS smartphones.

  • Best feature 1: Easy-to-use entry-level microphone
  • Best feature 2: Works without batteries or wires
  • Plus points: Small and lightweight, multi-purpose use, good working distance, windscreens
  • Minus points: Windscreen/muff shows in the shot with some smartphones

Comica CVM-VS08 Android Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Android (5.0 or above) and Apple iOS smartphones.

The CVM-VS08 is the ultimate plug and play microphone. It has a built-in 3.5mm audio jack (no cables) that plugs straight into your smartphone (no batteries). It’s a lightweight, all-metal machined-aluminum mic that’s robust and easy to carry around. The metal construction acts as an excellent anti-interference material. Users also praise the Comica CVM-VS08 for its superb sound quality.

Who Is the Comica CVM-VS08 For?

This mic is for anyone who wants or needs a boost to their audio quality. It’s at the higher end of entry-level and so provides better audio than the bargain-basement products. Consider the CVM-VS08 if you’re a vlogger, live broadcaster, or YouTube presenter on a budget. The crisp, clear audio quality won’t let you down. The mic also has an impressive working distance of up to 10ft in ideal conditions.

The sound monitoring function lets you listen to your recorded audio through headphones. The headphone port is located on the back of the mic. Extras include a foam windscreen, a dead cat wind muff, and an adjustable clamp for your smartphone.

The Not So Good

The foam windscreen and furry wind muff are essential for outdoor shooting. The problem is that they can creep into the shot with some smartphone cameras, which is annoying. It’s especially problematic if the mic input is on the same side as the phone’s camera.

6. Rode VideoMic ME Mini-Shotgun for Smartphones

Rode VideoMic ME Mini-Shotgun for SmartphonesView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

Rode’s VideoMic Me is quite a recent addition to the company’s VideoMic family. It’s a directional, shotgun-type microphone designed and optimized for use with modern smartphones.

  • Best feature 1: Designed specifically for smartphones
  • Best feature 2: Effective directional mic
  • Plus points: Easy to use, all-metal build, headset jack, adjustable phone clamp, huge windsock
  • Minus points: Won’t record ambient sounds, not suitable for all Android devices

Rode VideoMic ME Shotgun Phone Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Any Android or iOS device where the headset input is on the opposite side to the camera. That’s because the microphone and windsock would otherwise obscure the view.

Rode’s VideoMic ME is super-easy to use. Its directional polar pattern picks up audio directly from the subject and cancels out unwanted noise. The mic plugs right into the phone’s audio jack in both directions. That means you can direct it away or towards you if shooting in selfie-mode. At the back of the VideoMic ME is a headset jack that allows you to listen to the audio as you record it.

The mic’s clamp is fully-adjustable so that it can fit snug to any device, even with a case on. The VideoMic ME has a similar build and layout to the Comica above, but cost around 10 dollars more. I think the Rode’s slightly better audio quality is worth the bit extra.

The Not So Good

The cardioid polar pattern isolates the sound source well. The directional pick-up also rejects most ambient sounds. That’s an issue if you need to record the atmosphere of a place, space, or event for more realistic audio. Another downside is that this mic doesn’t work—or work well—with all Android devices. Check its compatibility with the seller if you’re interested in the Rode VideoMic ME.

  • Minus points: Thin cord, quite expensive

It comes with a foam windscreen that fits like a well-tailored glove. The tie clip lets you attach the tiny mic discreetly to any material. It’s an ideal tool for a whole range of close-mic digital speech applications.

The MOTIV MVL provides beautifully clear, crisp audio that’s suitable for professional applications. The app also allows real-time adjustments and file sharing via text, SMS, and email.

Consider the Shure MVL Android Lapel Mic if you want a discrete, portable sound solution.

The Not So Good

The mic wire or cord is incredibly thin. That adds to its discrete appeal, but it also more vulnerable to damage. The other negative is the price. Fans loyal to Shure products won’t mind the cost. Those open to other options may decide similar mics offer equal quality for less money.

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

The final review—for now—goes to the IK Multimedia iRig Studio. It’s a quality 1-inch digital condenser microphone that has a lot to offer for vocalists and musicians on the go.

  • Best feature 1: Quality, large-diaphragm
  • Best feature 2: Crystal clear audio
  • Plus points: Easy to use, portable, suite of recording apps, onboard controls, accessories
  • Minus points: Quite expensive

IK Multimedia iRig Studio Smartphone Mic Highlights

Microphone Compatibility: Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and PCs.

The IK Multimedia iRig is a large-diaphragm condenser mic suitable for a range of applications. It’s the go-to microphone for vocalists, musicians, voice-over artists, and home producers, etc. It’s big on performance yet small enough to fit into the palm of a hand. Portability is part of its appeal for mobile artists. Broad device compatibility, crystal clear audio, and ease of use are others.

Suite of Mic Controls

iRig’s Studio mic has a bunch of flexible onboard features. There’s a headphone output with level control, a colorful LED level indicator, and a knob for regulating gain. You also get a small suite of accessories to support the mic. They include a portable desktop tripod, a microphone clamp, USB, OTG, and Lightning cables.

Suite of Vocal Apps

This compact studio mic also comes with an entire suite of vocal apps. The apps harmonize across its platform compatibility. They include an effects processor called VocalLive, an EZ Voice singalong app, and apps specifically for field recording. This really is the anywhere, any device mic.

The Not So Good

The cost of this microphone is high if you’re unlikely to exploit its full potential. There are less expensive products that will do a similar job if your demands are basic. But it offers tremendous value for those likely to take full advantage of what the iRig Studio offers.
