Choosing the Best Dash Cam

Dash cams are relatively simple, but there are still a ton of options to choose from. Before you decide to buy a dash cam, you might want to consider the following factors first.

Multi-Camera Systems

The scope of video capture of dash cams may include 1 channel (front-facing) or 2 channels (front and rear-facing). There are even higher end models that offer 4 channels, which add cameras pointed at both sides of the car. For most applications, a front-facing camera should suffice. If you use your car for ride sharing services such as Uber or Lyft, you may benefit from a dash cam that also captures the interior of your car for the safety of both yourself and your passenger.

Most dash cam models can be mounted using either a suction cup or adhesive pads. Suction cups have the advantage of being easily removable, making them flexible in mounting on different positions or even on different cars. However, suction cup mounts tend to be large and unstable.

Adhesive pads provide a firmer anchor for the dash cam, resulting in more stable videos. They are also less conspicuous. The only drawback to using adhesive pads is that they are more or less permanent – you’ll need a new set if you decide to transfer your dash cam.

Video Quality

Most dash cams offer above average video quality with at least 720p resolution. There are models that offer resolutions of up to 1080p or 1440p, but this also results in bigger file sizes and more frequent overwriting. You also need to take note of how the camera performs in low-light conditions. If capturing dash cam videos at dark places is a concern, you may consider investing in a model with night vision capabilities.

LCD Screen

Basic dash cam models opt to not include an LCD screen which keeps them compact and less conspicuous. However, retrieving the videos and making adjustment to the camera will often involve taking out the memory card and opening it in a laptop. Dash cams with LCD screen make it much easier to review footage and adjust settings, but also make the dash cam design bigger and more visible.

Final thoughts

You’ve probably seen dash cam videos that captured actual road accidents. In case you get involved in one, a dash cam footage may be your best way to avoid liability. Think of it as a degree of insurance that you can buy at a very affordable price. The deals and discounts available this Black Friday make it even cheaper to own a dash cam, so there really is no reason not to have one.
