How to choose which gaming laptop to buy

Although gaming laptops generally come with higher than average hardware specs, there is still a lot of options right now which makes it overwhelming to decide. Think about the following before you choose a particular model:

GPU

The GPU is the most important part of a gaming laptop. most models come with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10-series GPUs. For mainstream games, a GPU in the GTX 1050 to 1060 range should deliver stellar performance in the middle to high settings. A GTX 1070 or GTX 1080 will allow you to play just about any game at the highest settings but they are significantly more expensive.

Display size

If you don’t plan to connect your gaming laptop to an external monitor, then you’ll be stuck using the laptop’s built-in screen. Larger is generally better, but it will also make your gaming laptop heavier and more expensive.

Refresh rate

Most gaming laptops have a refresh rate of 60Hz, which should be more than enough for most mainstream games. Some brands offer higher refresh rates of up to 144Hz, but these models usually have to sacrifice screen resolution. Screen resolutions higher than 1080p (such as 2560 x 1440) usually top out at 60Hz.

Processor

The CPU of a gaming laptop is actually less important than its GPU in terms of delivering a high-quality gaming experience. However, a Core i5 processor is generally recommended for gaming laptops. High-end models come with i7 processors, but you can expect them to be much more expensive.

RAM

High-end gaming can be very demanding on laptop RAM, so we recommend at least an 8GB RAM to at least run most mainstream games smoothly. Some models may offer 16GB RAM for a higher price, but the resulting improvement in performance may be worth splurging. Fortunately, most gaming laptops have a provision for upgrading of RAM, so you always have the option of improving your laptop’s memory in the future.

Storage

Most gaming laptops come with a high-capacity hard drive combined with a smaller SSD which serves as a boot drive. Having a dedicated SSD results in faster loading times, but can also make a gaming laptop more expensive.
