Samsung Gear VR Black Friday 2019 Deals

Posted on

The first Samsung Gear VR was launched at the time when the VR experience was more commonly delivered through the screens of smartphones. While the Samsung Gear VR didn’t exactly revolutionize the technology, its execution of the same concept was at a level of excellence much higher than any of its counterparts. More than two years after the last iteration of the Samsung Gera VR, it remains a fairly popular ‘gateway’ VR headset for beginners.

The thing about the Samsung Gear VR is that it’s a pretty old device. The first edition of the Samsung Gear VR was launched way back in 2014. Through incremental upgrades, newer versions were released over the next few years, culminating in their last: the SM-R325. The latest model came with a bunch of sweet upgrades, including a wider field of view, interchangeable USB-C and micro-USB connectors, and the handheld Gear VR controller.

The SM-R325 was released in 2017, so it’s not much of a surprise that this year’s Black Friday isn’t exactly brimming with Samsung Gear VR deals. The best you can get is this deal from Amazon, which offers the Samsung Gear VR SM-R325 for only $97.67. The headset originally sells for $129.99, so this is still a great deal despite the age of the technology.

Before you buy the Samsung Gear VR

Although the Samsung Gear VR is one of the cheapest ways to get into VR (especially with the deal that’ live right now), there’s something you need to consider before you decide to get one: compatibility. Obviously, the Gear VR is only compatible with Samsung phones. However, you also need to have just the right model.

The good news is that the latest version of the Gear VR is compatible with all of the other phones that were compatible with the older versions of the VR headset. The list of compatible phones isn’t all that long, though, so you should take the time to double-check.

List of compatible phones: Galaxy S9, S9+, Note8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6, S6 edge, A8 Star, A8, A8+

The deal we mentioned above is for the US version of the Gear VR, which is not compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. The good news is that you can also get the Note 9-ready version for just a few dollars more – it’s up right now for just $102.79, and you can buy it here.

Is the Samsung Gear VR worth a buy this Black Friday?

This may sound like a knock on the Samsung Gear VR, but we’re just stating the facts: it’s an old VR headset with outdated technology. The current VR trend has moved way past the idea of using smartphones as screens. Nowadays, standalone VR quests are starting to gain popularity while tethered VR headsets still considered the industry standard.

This trend means that we’re not likely to see any new smartphone-based VR headsets in the near future – at least, not from a major brand like Samsung. This is unfortunate if only for the fact that smartphone-based VR headsets are incredibly cheap and are a great way to get people into VR without having to spend a ton.

We consider the Samsung Gear VR as the ultimate example of that era. With an excellent handheld controller and a content library curated by Oculus, it pushed the boundaries of what was possible with a smartphone-based VR controller. It’s also incredibly cheap now, so there’s no reason not to get one if you already have a compatible Samsung phone.

Final thoughts

The Samsung Gear VR feels like the vestiges of a bygone era – a time when smartphones were still able to deliver an acceptable quality of VR content. However, there’s only so much that a smartphone can do with its limited screen resolution and lack of three-dimensional sensors. The VR headset industry has moved on from this stage, but it was left with the Samsung Gear VR standing at the top.

This Black Friday gives you the chance to get the Samsung Gear VR for less than $100. At such an incredibly low price, the Samsung Gear VR is still a great purchase. Will you enjoy the full-fledged VR experience? Get a Samsung Gear VR and find out for yourself.
