What Is Thunderbolt 3, Exactly?

Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) is a hardware interface that’s transforming the way we use computers. A single TB3 port and USB-C connectors open a plethora of exciting opportunities for laptop users. Keep reading if you’re unfamiliar with this technology, as it will change the way you buy new products.

Fast just got 8x faster

The purpose of Thunderbolt 3 is to deliver ultra-lightning speeds. A single, compact port offers scope and versatility never seen before. TB3 can connect to any data device, docks, or displays. We used to appreciate the super-fast speeds of 5Gb/s offered by USB 3.0 ports. Well, now you can expect 40Gb/s with Thunderbolt 3, and that’s a massive development.

Transfer speeds in perspective

There isn’t a faster computer port available than TB3 at the time of writing. You get 8x the data storage and up to 4x the video bandwidth. TB3 lets you transfer a 4K Ultra-HD movie in under 30/secs. That’s faster than the quickest trip to the bathroom. Or, let’s say you have a whole year’s collection of MP3 files you want to back up. That shouldn’t take any more than 5 minutes of your time.

Multiple connections from a single port

Thunderbolt 3 allows you to connect two displays from one port. There’s zero loss to quality from the shared monitors. In fact, you get enhanced clarity, incredible detail, and color that boasts 16M extra pixels than regular HD displays. No users of TB3 could ever return to the older technology.

A single Thunderbolt 3 port can connect to the following USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 devices:

Thunderbolt 3

  • USB 3
  • HDMI
  • VGA

Look for the Thunderbolt logo when you’re ready to upgrade. It’s the only cable you’ll ever need, and that’s the point. You have simplicity, unlimited connectivity, much less waiting around, and more time to get on with what’s important to you.

About my ‘Windows Thunderbolt 3 Laptops’ Guide

Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) ports are becoming more widespread, but they’re still not standard. I choose 7 Windows laptops for review from the brands that now use this interface. They are Lenovo, HP, Dell, MSI (Micro-Star International), and Razor. I also include one MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 for the Apple fans out there. The first 3 reviews are the Editor’s Top Picks in three budget categories.

Editor’s Rating: 4.8/5

The Best Budget laptop review with a Thunderbolt 3 port goes to the Lenovo Thinkpad T470s. It’s a rugged, well-secured computer that’s ideal for busy people on the go.

  • Best feature 1: Thunderbolt™ 3
  • Best feature 2: Windows 10 Professional
  • Plus points: Robust build, ultra-slim design, 2 colors available, plethora of port types
  • Minus points: Battery not removable, newer products available

Lenovo Thinkpad T470s 14” Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Professional

Lenovo’s Thinkpad T470s is an affordable pro-level laptop with a lot going on. The ‘S’ here is the upscaled model of the T470, which is lighter at just 2.94 lbs. and more impressive for several reasons. This ultra-thin laptop is available in silver as well as the familiar Thinkpad black. It’s not a flashy design, but it has a quality look and a durable feel to it nonetheless.

The most impressive thing about this Thinkpad is the number of ports it packs into a slim design. It has Thunderbolt™ 3, an Ethernet port, 3 x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and more. That’s quite an accomplishment considering the small chassis size. Other highlights include a 256GB hard drive, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 6th Gen Intel Dual Core i5-6300U 2.40GHz Processor.

The Not So Good

There are no major cons to this ultra-lightweight business-orientated laptop. A removable battery would have been a welcome touch, though most won’t see that as a deal-breaker. The Feature set and overall performance are comparable to most rivals in its class. However, this model has been around a while now. Thus, it’s sure to fall short in some areas to newer products around the same price.

2. HP Spectre x360 8th Gen Intel Core i7 | Best Value

HP Spectre x360 8th Gen Intel Core i7View on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.5/5

HP gets the Best Value slot with its popular Spectre x360-13t 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. This laptop has a luxurious design and comes packed with a plethora of high-end features.

  • Best feature 1: two Thunderbolt™ 3
  • Best feature 2: Two-in-one flip design give laptop or tablet mode
  • Plus points: Tiny webcam, ultra-bright screen, glass display, fingerprint reader, multiple ports
  • Minus points: Big top/bottom bezels, awkward touchpad, laptop runs warm

HP Spectre x360-13t 8th Gen w/ TB3 Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64

HP’s Spectre x360 here competes with the likes of Microsoft’s Surface Book 13.5”. This laptop has an ultra-thin, lightweight, all-metal design packed with impressive features. The gem-cut corners and glass display give it a polished finish, and an air of stylish quality. This is a 2-in-1 model, which means you can flip it around and use it in tablet mode too. There’s also a handy right-side fingerprint sensor.

The screen can reach ultra-bright levels. Screen brightness is something to think about if you work a lot outdoors. This model comes equipped with the smallest top-mounted webcam in the world at only 2mm. The number of ports is equally impressive for such a slim machine. They include 2x USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 enabled, 1x USB 3.1 Gen 1, a headphone/mic combo, and more.

The Not So Good

The top and bottom bezels are oversized and seem like a waste of space. The touchpad is another of the laptop’s least impressive features. It may take new users a while to get familiar with the left and right-click start/end points. Another observation is that the HP Spectre x360 gets uncomfortably hot at the bottom. Still, I haven’t read of any malfunctions because of its running temperature.

3. 2020 Dell (7390) XPS 13 w/ Thunderbolt 3 | Top Pick

2020 Dell (7390) XPS 13 w/ Thunderbolt 3View on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.9/5

Dell is a well-established name when it comes to high-quality computers. The company’s Eco-wise, ENERGY STAR approved XPS 13, gets the Editor’s Top Pick for lots of reasons.

  • Best feature 1: Three USB Type-C ports, two with Thunderbolt 3 support
  • Best feature 2: 10th Gen i7 processor,
  • Plus points: All-aluminum build, 1TB SSD, InfinityEdge touchscreen, top-mounted webcam
  • Minus points: Awkward keyboard, noisy fan

Dell XPS 13 (7390) w/ TB3 Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Home

Dell’s popular XPS 13 (7390) is one of the most powerful of all the ultra-portable laptops. It’s super-durable and cut from a single block of high-quality aluminum. It’s not cheap, but it does offer excellent value. This machine boasts an Intel Core 10th Gen i7 processor, UHD Intel Graphics, and 1TB of SSD storage. The 13.3” InfinityEdge anti-reflective touchscreen gives it an actual form factor of 11 inches.

The XPS 13 (7390) has 3x USB Type-C ports, two of which offer Thunderbolt 3 support. There’s also a headphone jack and a MicroSD card slot. Other highlights are the fingerprint reader, tiny, top-mounted HD webcam, and external battery indicator. Its power and versatility are impressive for an ultra-thin machine that’s only 0.45” thick and weighs less than 3 pounds.

The Not So Good

The Dell XPS-Premium is an exceptional workhorse, but it’s not perfect. The keyboard is hard work compared to modern standards. I can’t pin it down, but moving around the keys doesn’t feel as intuitive as it should. It could be related to the minimal vertical travel distance of the keys. Another shared gripe by quite a few users is the audible fan.

4. Lenovo ThinkPad T480 14″ w/ Thunderbolt 3

Lenovo ThinkPad T480 14 w/ Thunderbolt 3View on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.6/5

Meet the 2019 Lenovo ThinkPad T480 14”, the second most affordable laptop on the page. It’s a worthy travel companion for business and pleasure purposes.

  • Best feature 1: USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3
  • Best feature 2: 8th Gen Intel processor
  • Plus points: Fast & powerful, highly durable, port-rich, swappable battery, fingerprint sensor
  • Minus points: Screen could be brighter, extra heft compared to some rivals

Lenovo ThinkPad T480 14″ Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Professional, 64-bit

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T480 is a dependable 14” non-touch screen, port-rich, HD business laptop. It’s a fast machine that boats an 8th Gen Intel i5 processor. The left side ports include USB 3.1 Type-C, and USB 3.1 Type-C (Gen 2) Thunderbolt 3. On the right side are USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A), a Gigabit Ethernet port, HDMI, and a headphone/mic combo.

Consider the ThinkPad T480 if you ready to leave the desktop PC to become portable. Travel-friendly laptops need to be rugged, and this puppy doesn’t fall short. Lenovo puts all its ThinkPad laptops through stringent reliability and strength tests. The latter ensures its laptops can work in harsher environments and withstand rougher handling than rival products.

The swappable battery is invaluable for those on the road who are not always close to a power outlet. You don’t even have to power the machine down to make the swap. Other highlights are the Intel Wireless, Bluetooth v4.1, FingerPrint sensor, and HD 720p Webcam.

The Not So Good

The biggest letdown for the T480 is its screen. Colors and clarity are fine, but it’s quite dull when compared to rival models in the same price category. It does have a matt, anti-reflective surface that compensates somewhat for the low-average brightness. This laptop is also a tad thicker and heavier than a few of the alternatives, though some users do prefer a little extra heft.

5. Dell XPS 9570 15.6 Inch UHD w/ Thunderbolt 3

Editor’s Rating: 4.4/5

The Dell XPS 9570 15.6” is an excellent choice for anyone ready to replace the desktop with a laptop. It’s an all-powerful machine capable of satisfying the needs of both leisure and business users.

  • Best feature 1: Thunderbolt 3 port
  • Best feature 2: Large InfinityEdge touch display
  • Plus points: Ultra-light for its size, powerful, multi-port, InfinityEdge touch display
  • Minus points: Quite expensive, been around for a while

Dell XPS 9570 15.6” w/ Thunderbolt 3 Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Dell offers a lot of range and scope with its laptop computers. The XPS 9570 here has a large 15.6” InfinityEdge, anti-reflective touch display. This machine is a rugged workhorse and a perfect model for those who need a larger screen. Don’t let the size put you off if you need a portable companion. This puppy is still thin, and easily one of the lightest 15” laptops in the world right now.

For the spec lovers, this beauty has plenty of oomph. It sports an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 1TB of internal SSD memory, and 32GB (2 x 16GB) of RAM. The multiport setup includes 1x Thunderbolt 3, 2x USB 3.1 Gen 1, an HDMI 2.0 port, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack. The XPS 9570 also has a convenient fingertip reader and is equipped with stereo speakers, tuned with Waves MaxxAudio Pro.

The Not So Good

Some laptops don’t age, and Dell XPS 9570 is one of them. Its biggest deal-breaker—for some—will be the price tag. It’s an exceptional product, but is it worth the higher cost of some newer rivals? Only you can decide that. If having up-to-the-minute technology is a must-have requirement, then you’ll want to skip this model for something newer.

6. MSI GS65 Stealth Razor Thin Bezel Gaming Laptop

Editor’s Rating: 4.2/5

The MSI GS65 Stealth-002 is a 15.6” beast of a laptop made for gamers. It has a silky-smooth 240Hz panel, an extra-wide glass touchpad, and lightning-fast Thunderbolt 3. Let’s take a closer look.

  • Best feature 1: Thunderbolt 3 technology
  • Best feature 2: Extra-wide click pad
  • Plus points: Well-made, sleek design, gorgeous display, fast and powerful, impressive cooling
  • Minus points: Chassis flex, slow charging

MSI GS65 Stealth Razor Gaming Laptop Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Home

Consider the MSI GS65 Stealth if you want a razor-thin bezel gaming laptop and general workhorse. It has a sleek, eye-catching design with a truly professional finish. It can handle lots of heavy use before it even starts to get warm. Cooling uses 3 fans, 6 copper heat pipes, and 4 exhausts. The MSI GS65 Stealth gets its power from an Intel Core i7-8750H 2. 2–4. 1 GHz processor and supporting hardware.

This beauty comes with 512GB NVMe SSD storage and 32GB of RAM. The 15.6” screen is one of the main highlights. The wide-angle view and FHD, anti-glare display is captivating, yet easy on the eyes. And the dazzling RGB keys are sure to be a favorite with most gamers.

The Not So Good

You’d expect some chassis flex from a budget-end laptop, but not in this price category. It’s not bendy, and nor does it feel flimsy, to be fair, but there’s noticeable flex in keyboard’s central area. Another letdown is the absence of an SD card reader. The speakers also belong in the cons section. The volume is fine—after a little tweaking—but they lack base, so they’re not too easy on the ears.

7. Razer Blade 15” Gaming Laptop TB3 Capable

Razer Blade 15” Gaming Laptop TB3 CapableView on Amazon

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5

The penultimate laptop with Thunderbolt 3 review is for the Razer Blade 15” Gaming Laptop. The machine looks fantastic, it’s well-made, and has a pro-level high-quality feel to it.

  • Best feature 1: World’s smallest gaming laptop in its category
  • Best feature 2: 1x Thunderbolt 3 port
  • Plus points: Stunning design, ultra-thin, edge-to-edge display, customizable RGB key, cooling
  • Minus points: Gets hot while gaming, high price tag

Razer Blade 15 Gaming Laptop TB3 Capable Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: Windows 10 Home

This laptop is probably the world’s smallest gaming laptop in its class. Raser built it with gamers and creative artists in mind. It’s slim, light, aesthetically pleasing, and powerful. The 15.6” Full-HD edge-to-edge display has just 4.9mm bezels. That means no distracting borders. The machine sports a 0.7″ ultra-thin CNC aluminum body and bespoke vapor chamber to keep the beast cool during use.

Moreover, it also exploits innovative thermal materials to dissipate the heat quietly and efficiently. These materials not only help to maximize performance but also add to user comfort. The Razer Blade’s other highlights include Biometric Security, Customizable RGB Keyboard Key lights. Hardware specs included the 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 512GB internal storage, and 16GB of RAM.

The Not So Good

The cooling system—in general—is impressive, but not in full Gaming Mode for extended periods. No one would want it on their lap for too long, especially wearing shorts. It’s a dependable and capable machine, though. Still, it seems a little pricy compared to some rivals, especially as it lacks G-sync and has relatively small storage. Games take a lot of space, and future ones will need even more of it.

Apple Mac Uses Thunderbolt 3 Too

Thunderbolt 3 is also with Apple MacBook computers. Make sure your next MacBook uses this hardware interface if you’re an Apple fan who’s ready to upgrade. All the new MacBook Pro family of computers have Thunderbolt 3. Below is a review for the popular 13” Pro that has 2 TB3 ports.

8. Apple MacBook Pro 13″ w/ 2 Thunderbolt 3 Ports

Editor’s Rating: 4.7/5

The last review is for an Apple MacBook Pro, which runs on the macOS Mojave operating system. I included this example to show how Thunderbolt 3 technology is not restricted to Windows machines.

  • Best feature 1: Two Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Best feature 2: Blazing fast 2TB Solid State Drive
  • Plus points: Stunning design, well-made, Ultra-light & thin, Touch ID, decent battery life
  • Minus points: No memory card slot, only has USB-C ports, no MagSafe

Apple MacBook Pro 13” w/ TB3 Ports Highlights

Preinstalled Operating System: macOS Mojave

Most who buy an Apple MacBook Pro know the machines inside out. This review is for those of you who are curious or thinking about moving over to these high-end laptops. Let’s start with power and speed. It has a blazing fast 2TB SSD with incredible 32.GB/s read speeds, and 2.2GB/s write speeds. Moreover, new MacBook Pros sports the most versatile and powerful ports ever—Thunderbolt 3.

The 13” model here weighs just 3 pounds and is only 14.9mm thick. It boasts an outstanding Retina Display that strikes the perfect color balance using True Tone Technology. The computer’s Touch Bar replaces function keys with simple smooth Tap, Flick, Hold, and Slide movements. This computer also lets users fully customize the functions they use most.

Other MacBook Pro tech highlights are its Touch ID, 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. Welcome enhancements include the new Apple-designed keyboard and a Force Touch Trackpad. The Pros battery life is on the high side of average, giving around 10 hours in ideal conditions.

The Not So Good

No Apple MacBook is perfect, though diehard fans may dispute that. But this model doesn’t have a memory card slot. It’s not a deal-breaker, but a card slot would have been welcome all the same. The only ports this machine has are USB-C ports. Some may argue that’s all you need today, but choice is always a good thing in my book. Lastly, there’s no more MagSafe on newer MacBooks.
