The Not So Good

It can take some getting used to (see below), but once you do, there’s no looking back. The build quality is solid and professional. And the audio reproduction is silky smooth and suitable for a range of voice types.

One of the mic’s standout features is its four selectable tone switches. Most broadcast mics are stuck with a single tone. Another SM7B highlight is its internal air suspension system. What that does is eliminate all mechanical type noise transmission. Thus, the mic doesn’t need an external shock mount to protect it. There’s also a close-proximity pop filter to help reject voiced plosives.

The Not So Good

The downside to Shure’s SM7B is that it’s quiet, which is typical for many dynamic mics. Its signal needs a considerable boost using a preamp or mic activator. It can be challenging to get the right amount of clean gain without background hiss. It is doable, though, with something like the Cloudlifter CL-1. The mic is also quite expensive, but it should last forever and a day.

The Not So Good

The desktop tripod stand is rickety and easy to knock over. It’s better than nothing, but my advice would be to replace it. Look for something with a little more heft and flexibility. Some users—but not all—have connectivity issues with this mic for Windows 10. Check with the seller for an update on compatibility if you want to use the AT2020USB with WIN 10 OS.

The mic stand is sturdy and attractive, but it can pick up vibrations. Users need to think carefully about where to place it for the best result. One solution is to mount the mic onto a scissor boom arm instead. The mic is heavy, though, so make sure the boom can hold its weight. The mic’s size and weight also mean it’s not very travel-friendly. Lastly, it’s quite expensive if you don’t exploit all that it offers.

Built Like a Brick, Made to Last

This mic feels like a well-engineered hammer in hand, only far more attractive. Its steel construction provides some serious heft. It’s not a cheap mic, but then Electro-Voice built this puppy to last. It comes with a pre-installed 5/8 to 3/8 mic stand adapter. The attractive vents around the body are there to help with the Variable-D technology, which minimizes the proximity effect.

There’s a low-cut filter located at the bottom of the mic, which is its only on-body control. The RE20 sounds fantastic on the voice and does an excellent job at background noise rejection. An integral blast/wind filter covers all the acoustic openings to lessen sibilance and plosives. The RE20 also performs well with instruments. It’s especially suited to acoustic guitars and to mike kick drums.

The Not So Good

Electro-Voice’s RE20 has low-sensitivity, more so than many other dynamic microphones. That means it needs a decent preamp to drive it for the best results. Those who spend this kind of money on a microphone should know how to deal with that. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s not overpriced for a classic broadcaster mic. As for the muddy green color, well, that’s something you either love or hate.
